It all comes back to genetics and the parents size. My pup is 10 weeks and weighs 12.5 pounds which is just fine to me. We take great care of our little pup and that is all that truely matters, right?

It does seem a bit small for a male pup of that age.
The guideline of months per pounds is usually 3months-30lbs, 4 month -40lbs, 5months-50lbs, etc. This can be more or less and usually male pups are bigger then female pups.

Your pup should be about 50lbs...but it also depends on genetics, and if the pup has had a healthy start, etc.
Have you had him checked for worms? That would first thing on my list if I had a smaller puppy.

My Leo who is a GSD/Rott mix is 14 weeks tomorrow and he is right around 25-26 lbs. He would not sit on a scale still enough for a good weight. He goes to the vet next thursday and we will see then at 14 weeks 5 days.

Since you have a mix, GSD's are much lighter in weight then a Rott..you pup should weigh less.
To weigh your pup at home, weigh yourself on a scale and then pick up puppy and weigh yourself again...and then minus the difference.

This is only good till the pup is about 50 lbs though...too heavy for lifting after that.

30 lbs at 3 months? As I have mentioned my pup is 10 weeks, almost 11 and weighs 12.5 pounds. I highly doubt that she will gain anywhere near 18 pounds in the next week and a half.

I know that :). I was just giving the example to the original poster how much my mix weighed. My mix has more the rott traits than anything.
Here is an older pic. He was only 7 weeks. My camera has since then broke.

My aunts male GSD who is 16 months old weighs 111 lbs. He is enormous for a GSD. All her others have been in the 60-85 lbs range until she got Charlie.

That would be for a male pup.
My pup Baxter was 11 lbs at 8 weeks, and then seemed to grow with this guideline. Some months he gained 10lbs and some months a bit more and some months a bit less.

Some pups start slowly and gain more at 9-12 months...some gain steadily till about 9 months.

Weight is not the only factor, height and activity level..also bone structure and growth patterns.

Your pup sounds like she is gaining fine. The most important is slow and steady weight gain and growth.

Such a cutie, Taylor!

I usually weigh my pups (until I can no longer physically do this) by holding them in my arms, stepping on the scale, and figuring out that weight. Then I weigh myself and subtract that. It's not perfect, but it's a decent estimate.

My rott, Samson, is 10 months and weighs 108 lbs. His siblings weigh anywhere from 62-76 lbs which is normal. The vet checked him yesterday and says he's in good shape. He's also taller than the rest of them.

Re: Correct weight for a puppy

my boy brew is 9 weeks and was weighed at the vet last friday to be 22 lbs.
Vet was happy, and he is definitely big boned. My last rotti was only 14 lbs at this age, and he looked fine. It definitely depends on build.

Re: Correct weight for a puppy

Greti has kicked it into gear. We were at the vet two week ago and she weighed 21 pounds 12 weeks. She has added 3 times her body mass in the 6 weeks we have had her.

My male is putting on sympathy weight. he tipped the scales at 126 at the vet last week. time for a diet

Our 11 1/2 month old spayed Rott female, Ellie, is right at 90 lbs. and stands 4-5 inches taller and longer than our 5 & 6 year old spayed female Labs who both weigh about 75-80 lbs. Ellie eats just what the vet told us to feed her--4 cups of dry Purina puppy chow in the morning and 3 cups of dry Purina puppy chow in the evening. She always finishes almost all of this (rarely leaving more than 1/8 cup at each meal) and the vet says that she is in perfect health. She is in the yard all day with the Labs and they continue to play with each other all day long. She sleeps alot in the evenings while we watch TV and sleeps on my bed each night. The vet says that she is developing very normally. She is a JOY in our lives.

Re: Correct weight for a puppy

Radmo,
My dog, now 4.5 months old eats about 3.5 cups a day and wont eat more. He is on Canidae. It recommends 2.5-5 cups a day for his size. With purina, you have to feed more with all the fillers. He is a healthy 41 lbs and growing slowly. Im not sure exactly why you quoted my post.

I used your quote because of the disparity in the number of cups you are feeding and what we are feedin Ellie. Nothing more. Thanks for your reply.
