Just came back from the feed store: Nutro, Canidae, Innova?!?!?

OK so I read a bunch of threads and thought I heard the most good things about Canidae. Went to the store was about to ring up and the guy asks "why are you getting Canidae?" I tell them that I read on this thread that tons of people like it and I am getting a new puppy and want her to have the best. He then asks me what kind of dog I have and proceeds to tell me that NUTRO is better because it has a 1:1 Calcium to Phosporus ratio and for big dogs that is better so they have stronger bones and joints (also with glucosamine and stuff) and that it comes in puppy formula for a puppies specific nutrition needs. I thought I had read Nutro wasn't all that great, so I listened, and turned around and left to come here and go back to those suggessted websites. They also had Eagles Pack, Innova (Evo) and more. What should I do? Now I am all confused.

I feed Canidae and my dogs do very well on it.

When you read the threads in Nutrition - skip the name part and look at the ingredients. That concerns me more then the name on the bag. I have been considering a change, but not without carefully reading ingredients first.

1.coat shiner.
2.doesn't eat like he's starving to death
3.more compact and less poop.
he is 16 weeks old and eats 3 cups a day.
He has been gaing 10-13 pounds a month.
Just my experience with Innova(large breed puppy)

My dog's are getting EVO, and they LOVE it. I like the fact there are four meat sources, and no grains. I did alot of research on foods before settling on EVO, if I couldn't get it, I'd feed Innova Adult, Canidae, or Solid Gold, in that order. I have not ever considered Nutro, although many people like it.

What's the California something-or-another food I've seen at my local health food store? It was a FORTUNE!!! I think I remember hearing it was good food but I couldn't believe the price. I'd be in the poor house in no time trying to feed 2 maniacs!

Nutro cannot be compared to Innova or Canidae.
Nutro does not use human grade meat in their products and has alot more grains and less meat. Nutro is a middle of the road food....not bad, not great.

Canidae has 1.20% calcium to .90% phosphorus
Innova Adult has 1.16% calcium to 0.93% phosphorus
EVO has 2.78% calcium to 1.45% phosphorus (very high) this is why it is NOT recommended for growing large breed pups.
Both Canidae and Innova Adult are very close to the 1:1 ratio of calcium/phosphorus that is recommended for growing large breed puppies.

The amount of glucosamine that is put in Nutro food is almost negligent...the dog would have to eat 5lbs of food to get any theraputic help from the small amounts added. Just another marketing ploy. The ingredients in Nutro are way less in quality then Innova or Canidae.

California Natural is a very good food. It is often recommended here for dogs that are having skin or tummy problems because there are only 3 ingredients in the food.
The food may be pricey, but much less needs to be fed...so per serving the food may cost just as much as any grocery store food.

My Pup eats Canidea and loves it!He is one gerorgus dog.Shinny coat and muscular body! His parents were on it and they were champions and most people here have great things to say about it.I'd take that over a guy that sells all sorts of food for all types of animals any day!

Hi, I live in PHX and I purchased a bag of Canidae over 5weeks ago over at TEMPE FEED & TRACK on University & Hardy ($31.50 for 40lb bag). My Diamond(17weeks) loves it, her coat was dull on Pedigree/Authority and now she gets compliments wherever we go. Her coat is so shiny, you can see her Muscle Structure when she walks, similar to that of a Panther

Now only if I can start eating better and working out

I was speaking to the director of a rescue group for Rotti and asked her opinion about the food she feeds her Rottis. She uses a food called Hund=n=Flocken. According to the site it runs about 38.95 for 33 lbs. She has great success with food allergies, ear infections and so on since she began using it. What do you think?

Her second choice wasCanidea and third was California Natural.

Being in the UK we don't obviously have a lot of the feeds you discuss on here.Is James Wellbeloved available in the US?If so does anyone feed it?We recently(a month or so ago) made the switch and the improvements are noticeable already.Just curious!

Hund-n-Flocken is a Solid Gold food.
Dry food formula made with Lamb, Millet, Amaranth, Barley and Brown Rice. Ideal for moderately active adult dogs, to maintain total health.

Protein, Min 22%
Fat, Min 10%
Fiber, Max 4%
Moisture, Max 10%
Calories per cup, 367

Ingredients
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lamb | Lamb Meal | Millet | Brown Rice | Cracked Pearled Barley | Oatmeal | Rice Bran | Menhaden Fish Meal | Canola Oil | Flax Meal | Amaranth | Blueberries | Dried Chicory Root | Carotene | Choline Chloride | Vitamin E Supplement | Iron Proteinate | Zinc Proteinate | Yucca Schidigera Extract | Copper Proteinate | Manganese Proteinate | Potassium Iodide | Thiamine Mononitrate | Ascorbic Acid | Vitamin A Supplement | Biotin | Calcium Panthothenate | Sodium Selenite | Pyridoxine Hydrochloride | Vitamin B12 Supplement | Riboflavin | Vitamin D Supplement | Folic Acid |

I think someone mentioned before that the Solid Gold Mmillenia Beef and Barley is a good food for dogs with alleriges and such. A lot of grain, but overall the Solid Gold line would be my choice before I'd feed Nutro. One of my local pet stores gave me 3 samples of each flavor to try on my dogs...the loved each flavor, but in the end I stuck with Innova...and went to EVO.

My vote is for Innova Adult or EVO, hands down.

WOW !!! I wish I knew this before switching from Science Diet LB Puppy to Nutro's Natural Choice Lamb & Rice LB Puppy last Fri. Now I am worried if Nutro isn't right for my puppies. :( They have been on Science Diet LB Puppy for like 3 months and all of the sudden they had diaherra. We really thought it was the dog food so after the vet visit, we decided to change the food. Well, at least if Nutro isn't working out, we still have Canidae as a backup !!!

I feed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice LB Adult & Nutro Natural Choice LB Puppy; I recently switched (6 days ago)from Eukanuba LB puppy & adult. Now I see:
- Truly Shinier Coat--they had a shiny coat before but when you went to pet them dandruff would spring up all over, now you can run your hands thru and no dandruff
-No more eye boogers
-Clean plates
-Dont wolf it down like they haven't eaten
-Better Breath
-Less Gas (until I gave them a DINGO rawhide bone like a ding-dong, never again WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY TELL ME!!)
-From what I've seen they only poop twice a day now with low odor; whereas they used to poop, walk around, poop some more, and then some more, and it STANK.
I have never seen a Canidae or Innova bag of food before and I can only get what is in the petstores as Alabama isn't too resourceful in the animal industry. I am not saying that they are not good, but don't feel bad about your choice of Nutro; I am very comfortable and feel better now that I SEE the difference, because I just knew Eukanuba had to be the best of the best until I found out otherwise;
I went to the top ten dog food site, but some of those foods I have never heard of much less seen before and I just can't keep up with ordering food off the net. But this is what I came from:
1st-Purina Pro Plan
2nd-Science Diet
3rd-Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy
Present-Nutro Natural Choice
