Puppy Exercise Just wondering can anyone tell me how much I should walk my pup. She is 6.5 months old now and we usually bring her out walking between 40-60min each day. Someone told me that has another big dog not to walk them too much when they are a pup as they are still growing? cheers John

Im no pro.. but I would think just long enough till the puppy gets tired. :-) Afterall, the walks are for the dogs, aren't they. Enough exercise too!

Well I asked my vet this question because I also didn't want to over-exercise Oscar. He told me that I wasn't walking Oscar far enough at 10 w/o and that it was okay to start adding some distance on. He is now 13 w/o and he goes for 2 walks a day. One in the early morning and one in the late evening (when it's cooler). I'd say we walk about 15-20 minutes for each walk. But we worked up to that slowly (added 1/2 to 1 block per week) and he's never shown exhaustion etc. He also gets some play time in the morning and after dinner out in the yard to roam, eat grass, eat more grass , play in his little pool etc. So if you're dog is 6 m/o and doesn't seem exhausted after a walk, I'd think a 40-60 minute walk isn't too much at all. Just watch the temp. outside etc so he doesn't overheat and/or hurt his paws on the hot pavement.Julie
