Microchip Common?

Well, my sweet little Haley is 5.5 months now and she will be getting spayed next week (sigh). I also told them they could micro chip her at that time. Do people here typically microchip your Rotties? My previous dog never had one and I am wondering if this is an absolute must do or more optional. Also, I am searching now to see if there are any health concerns associated with the simple chipping. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Cash is Microchipped. There was nothing to it. It's about the size of a grain of rice inserted behind his shoulders. He was awake and not bothered in the least. As far as I could tell from his body posture and reaction...

I think it's a great option to exercise for the safety of your dog. Now, when they can apply the LoJack technology on these things, I'll be impressed!!

I have five dogs all chipped. I feel better knowing I have provided one more thing that may aid in their safe return should the unforseen ever happen.

Me, too. Just check to be sure it's a chip that can be read by universal scanners. I had it done on a regular vet. I don't think he even realized anything was being done.

all my dogs are chipped.i use AVID.
i just read an article that is best after 3 months of age,
so the scapula area muscle is more developed, and less chances
of migrating.
in some areas it's mandatory to chip pets before selling.
and for ofa xrays,a microchip is considered a permanent id,
for ofa submission.
and of course, if someone takes your dog, you have a form of id on your dog.
it is a very good idea.

Every dog I own is chipped. Every puppy I place, rescue or one I bred is also chipped and the chip stays in my name for the life of the dog.

Personally I think everyone who places dogs or pups should be required to chip them, then these strays at shelters could be tracked and people held accountable in addition to dogs finding their owners

AVID and Home again can be read by all shelter scanners

Both of my dogs were microchipped when they were neutered - Kudlow at 6 months and Cramer (rescue) at six years.

All of my dogs are chipped. To my knowledge, there are no heath concerns with chipping an animal. It's truly the only way to expect a lost pet to return to you. Tattoos are of little use, as most won't bother to search a Rottweiler for a tattoo, there is no central registry, no central numbering scheme, etc.

Emily is "chipped" also but I'm curious about one thing. Why would you "chip" a puppy that you are placing in your name?

In Canada, any pup that is registered with the CKC must be either micro-chipped or must be tattooed by the breeder before it is sold.

Baxter was tattooed by his breeder, but I did have Baxter chipped at the same time of his neuter. It was the AVID chip.

I agree with Gretchen, most people will not look in the groin of an adult Rottweiler to check for a tattoo.

I have never heard of any dogs having problems with the chips.

My two are chipped along with my cat. Just in case she gets loose one day. makes me feel better in case they lose their collers, there is something that may bring them back home.

My rott is chipped as was my last one. An identification tag on the collar can be lost, whereas a microchip is for life and the chances of it not being detected if the dog is found and checked, are very few.

Mine are all chipped. I also haul them into the stray building at the SPCA when we're there for an event to make sure they're still readable.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Even pups I keep are chipped for both security and identification (per AKC breeder rules) purposes

ALL pups I place are chipped and the chips remain registered to me so that if the dog is lost I will be called and be able to contact the owner and I will know that the dog was loose and picked up. It is also a positive way to id a dog in the event I get back a dog I placed as a pup, I can thus prove it is in fact the actual dog I placed and not a look alike

I had my dog chipped a few months back. It caused him no discomfort as he was so excited to be around the vet and never even noticed the dagger being plunged into his shoulder blade area. :)

The last time I visited the breeder I got Kalil from, she was chipping all of her dogs that day as I believe it's the law in Iowa now for breeders. At least that's what she said. Or maybe it was some other law/rule and wasn't paying attention.
