Unhappy NYC house training

I just recently got a 10 week old rotti and I wanted to know how to properly house train my puppy. There is the problem that I can't take her outside because she isn't fully vaccinated until 16 weeks. I have been crating her and shes been getting better at it. At first I was taking her outside every 45 mins or so, but she just bottles up! She only goes inside. My vet told me that I should just babygate her into my bathroom or in a playpen and give her newspaper to pee on along with a bed and water bowl. Now I heard its best to crate a puppy, but now I'm confused about what I should do. My breeder suggested crating, but should I instead of bringing her outside, bring her to the bathroom to pee?

Also by letting go inside the apt, doesn't that let her think that she can go inside? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to housetrain my puppy?

*I also want to mention that she had 2 accidents in her crate already. I have been trying to let her out every 45 mins to pee, but she just doesnt go. I am going to try letting her pee on newspaper in the bathroom from now on and see how that goes.

Well, I am of the belief that because many more dogs die from poor socialization as opposed to a disease which could have been prevented by vaccination, these young dogs should infact be getting out to see the sights and sounds of the world. That being said, I would avoid common urinating/defecating grounds: building corners, fire hydrants, dog parks etc.

I recently posted this in another topic that I think would help you also - sorry so long and some may not apply, or may, take what you need...

I am also in agreement with Rottlva - we have socialized our puppy from day 1 regardless of shot status - I think it is far more important to have a friendly healthy dog than a nervous healthy dog, whats the chances as long as you are taking good precaution... try not to let her drink stray puddles or objects and stay away from other dogs... (had that problem once with other dogs, ended up with worms(not me the dog) lol) but here you go, hope it helps!

We potty trained our Blitz but we got lucky, he caught on really fast. Not even a mess after the first night in the house and he woke me up at 8AM wanting outside to potty. I have no idea how I was so fortunate considering he was outside in the kennel his whole life before that.

Anyhow that was a little history on the potty training. Most people I see on a day to day basis mention the little blue and white potty pads they sell at pet shops. Well I have gotten him pretty house broken except for the occasional mistake and I have never used a pad, newspaper, or anything. using them in a way will make the puppy think hey it is okay to poo in the house as long as it is on something, so unless you want that I wouldnt support it, just my opinion. Now mind you there have been a couple mistakes. And thanks to this forum I think the training went a lot better due to that.

Please do me a favor and not correct the rotti for mistakes on carpet you walk in and find, I have learned from here that many owners make that mistake and the puppy has no idea why it is being corrected unless you catch him in the act, even then a stern no and carry him outside. place him in grass and when he goes - praise praise praise. I read an ad on this one time and it suggested a method of correction:

1. Roll up a newspaper and keep it handy
2. When you see the puppy pottied on the floor grab newspaper
3. beat yourself senseless in the back of head with newspaper while saying "Bad owner! Bad owner!" for the PUPPY should be taken out enough not to have to go in the house (with the occasional accident)

Something else that helped me was watching his body language - with a rottie pup running around the house you have to have at least one eye on him most of th time anyhow, they get mouthy and they chew a lot. They are puppies, so you should be able to spot suspicious behaviour, squatting, sniffing a lot in spots.

There are ways to train your dog to do certain actions when it has to go - training message board seems to have a load of information on this with bells and barks. Just do some reading.

I wasnt given too much information on what experience you have with rotties; so I just kind of threw a lot of information I have learned together, I hope I helped and not offended by prying too much, just trying to pay back some of what I have learned! Welcome aboard!

I think you should take your puppy outside...

You cant keep him inside like that, he needs exercise and socialization...the most important time is around this stage...

ok, i will try to take her outside. But the problem I am having is that she just wont go outside! She just bottles up and refuses to pee. When we come back inside, she will go right away. How do I correct this? I have praised her for goin outside, but it seems she hates concrete. How do I stop her from going on the carpet? Just say a stern NO? Any suggestions?

She has learned that when she stops, you don't make her go. Time to change the Ghandi routine!! Let her walk, coaxing her with some yummy food treats, and cookie treat her as she goes forward. As she gets better at this slowly phase out the treats.

She will go potty outside if she needs to go badly enough. I would suggest walking her for a bit to stimulate the bowels and bladder....Then after she is done, praise her!!! If she is going on paper in the house, then you can bring out a peice of soiled paper and place it down on the grass to help her associate her scent with the correct potty spot.

It just means that you are not staying out long enough. (sorry, and I know you feel like you have been out there for hours, but you must stay however long it takes or she will be going in the house forever. After you stay out "long enough" and she goes out a couple of time, things will speed right along.

If she hates going on concrete, can you find a patch of grass or a sandy spot? She probably does not like it splashing back up on her.
