Nutro Natural Choice Ultra Puppy Food

Our breeder uses Nutro Natural Choice Ultra Puppy Food. Has anyone had any experience with this food? We were doing some research and it has 30% protein, is that acceptable?
Thanks for any info.
Christine

Sounds good to me, but what do I know? I feed Evo at min 42% protein. How old is your puppy? Protein is the primary staple in a K-9's diet so I'd say you are on the right track.

P.S. I think you meant to write acceptable not "exceptable"

Sounds like a decent grub, I started my girl on Nutro after 9 weeks then made the switch to Blue Buffalo (which is excellent) now we are at Evo (which is tremendous). Again, you are certainly headed in the right direction.

Nutro Ultra is a relatively new food, so you might not find too many people using it right now. But if I couldn't find a premium food to feed my dog, I woud have no problem feeding him Nutro Ultra. The ingredients, from what I remember, put it up there with some very good super premium foods on the market. But this was for adult food and not puppy food, but I suspect the ingredients are pretty much the same.

I just started using Nutro Ultra, I was feeding Nutro lamb and rice, but after comparing ingredients I switched. So far so good, my girl seems to like it more than the lamb and rice. I had to add water or mix it with can for her to really eat the lamb and rice. Ultra ingredients are second to none. I'll keep you updated on how she does though.

In all honestly it would not be a food I would feed to a puppy. I just took a look at the ingredients...they are o.k. chicken meal, whole brown rice, rice bran, poultry fat, ground rice. It seems like an awful lot of rice.
They do not use human grade meat either....but do throw in all sorts of other "goodies"...that make it sound holistic.

For the same amount of money or even less, I would be feeding Canidae or Innova...they both contain alot more meat.

Also I would not be feeding puppy food. We have discussed this on another thread and there is no way I would be feeding a puppy 30% protein. With a large breed you want slow steady growth.

I also looked at the feeding amounts on the website and you have to feed almost double the amount of food on the Nutro Ultra...with Canidae or Innova much less food is needed.

I guess if I could not get any other brand of food...I would probably feed the Nutro Ultra Adult to a pup....but it would not be my first choice.

Just my $.02. I'm not a food sciences graduate, or anything like that. But I do feed Nutro Ultra puppy natural choice, and I like it. Some of the other premium brands mentioned were too "rich" for S'dragon, and made runny messy poos and upset tummys for us.

S'Dragon has done very well on it, and has all the signs of good health. Good poo's that don't smell too bad, good coat, energy, good growth, etc.

IMO, Nutro is a decent company that has invested in doing the research, and clinical trials with their foods. I'm not saying they are the best, or the only good company. I do like that if you don't like their food, or your dog doesn't do well, they will refund you no questions asked.

It's easy to get, and does not spoil too quickly. (important to me anyways) It does have some preservative ingredients, but they seem to try to keep it minimal. We don't want to keep a warehouse full of food, but we would like it to not go bad before he finishes the bag.

We are likely going to move him towards Wolfpack or something else in the "high quality"/"good storage" range in the next few months.

Be a little careful of the "human grade meat" arguments, remember that people actually eat spam, klick, and some unidentifiable hot dog shaped things. I don't think that AAFCO would pass these for use in animal feeds.

I like the Nutro ultra puppy, there are lots of good choices. Find something that works for you, your pup, and your budget.
Use the forum search for dog food. It's a pretty persistent thread. DO NOT feed anything bought at walmart or a supermarket.

I fed my rotty Nutro and he loved it too. Then he stopped eating it when he got about 15 months or so. Switch to the Walmart adult food "maximus nutrition" and he seems to like it. Same poop quantity and etc... No difference. Well actually he has been on it for a month now. We'll see how it goes.

The first 4 ingredients in Nutro Ultra puppy are: Chicken meal, whole brown rice, rice brand and Lamb meal.

Chicken meal is better than just chicken and it is goo that it is listed as the first ingredient. It is not unusual for rice to be some of the main ingredients and then to have Lamb meal (again better than just lamb) listed in the top 4 - I think that is just fine.

If you look at the ingredients in California Natural, their first ingredient in Chicken meal, then ground brown rice and ground white rice and then sunflower oil. And CN is an excellent food.

Canidae has an excellent first two ingredients of chicken and turkey meal, but followed next by ground brown rice and ground white rice.

So I don't think it's quite off par with Nutro Ultra. But food is a matter more of opinion and everyone likes something different. Oh, and I have no idea whats best for puppies. These analogies were for adult dog foods.

Nope...no need to be a food science graduate....to know what ingredients should be in a decent dog food. There are all sorts of books and info on the net about what should be in a decent food. For some good info in what goes into many dog foods including Nutro I suggest you read "Food Pets Die For" written by Ann N. Martin. She has done an indepth study on the pet food industry. Also K9 Kitchen:Your Dogs' Diet (The Truth Behind the Hype) written by Monica Segal.

Human grade meat means exactly that...it is fit for human consumption. If it is not human grade the pet food companies can use the four D's...Dead, Dying, Diseased and Decayed meats .

The reason your dog may have had loose stools on the super premium foods is that you may have been feeding too much. I think this is one of the big mistakes that people make...these foods contain so much more meat and very few grains...they are digested and utilized so much better by the dog that they need very little to sustain.

I would also suggest, since in another thread you said that your pup is 11 months old and already 110 lbs, that you take him off of the Nutro Ultra Puppy. You may have problems with his fast growth in the future.
Rottweilers are a medium to large breed, not a giant breed.

130 lbs for a rottweiler is far from overweight. It just depends on how the dog has the weight put on. The breed standard ranges up to 130 lbs (if I'm not mistaken).

My male is 135 lbs, and its not from overfeeding, he is just naturally thick.
