new puppy not eating

I feel like such a new mom, we picked up our 7 week old rottie this weekend and he chowed down just fine on Sat (Purina One puppy food for large breeds) but since then he has only eaten a very few of the kibbles and is noticebly lighter in the last 48 hours.

Add to the not eating he's having diarrhea and last night was throwing up.

any thoughts, suggestions, tricks to get him to eat again ?

Straight to the vet please. You don't know what he might have been incubating that has become full blown with the stress of the new environment. Diarrhea and vomiting can quickly dehydrate and kill a young pup.

I agree get him to the vet ASAP. If he gets dehydrated it will be very bad.

it can be parasites, viral,or swallowed something.go to the vet asap.
you can lose a puppy very fast.
if it was just not eating much but otherwise ok,it would not be such a big deal.
but vomiting and diarrhea-run!
good luck.keep us posted.

the vet doesn't open until nine...had planned to call at 9:01, but wanted to check in with you guys. I am thrilled to have found this group as i'm sure there will be many more issues we face - I've never owned a rottie before (boyfriend has) so it will be nice to talk to folks with experience in their special needs

just to add though - in spite of the lack of food he is a bundle of energy chasing us up and down the hall and his ball all over the place this morning

thanks for the quick replies, will keep you posted about the vet visit

It has been over 20 years since I had a new puppy (and that one was 3 mos old when I got it) I never even thought to ask the breeder what she was feeding it. I have since found out that it is different food, the breeder was feeding the pups WalMart puppy food.
Is it major critical to feed the same food as the breeder? If it is then I will happily drive the 80 miles round trip to the nearest WalMart to get that brand, it just seems odd that he ate it fine on Sat when I got him home.

not neceaarily, but if the puppy has a sensitive stomach and the diet change is big,
they can be a bit off their diet and have an upset stomach.but if he did fine at first, just rule out anything serious with the vet.

I see that you are in Salinas, CA. There is a Walmart in Salinas.
It is not critical that you feed the same, but it helps to not switch cold turkey. I just brough home my own puppy less then 2 weeks ago. It hasn't been 4 years since my last puppy, but I had forgotten just how hard it is to have a new puppy!
The breeder was feeding frozen Biljac. I looked all over the state for that stuff and couldn't find it. I ended up hauling a 5 pound bag of the stuff home with me on the airplane. Took a week to switch over to the stuff I am feeding now.
Good luck with the new puppy. Glad to hear that he is still active- huge relief to us out here in cyber land. The big fear is parvo, but the puppy wouldn't be doing zoomies. Good to get him to the vet just to make sure. Hopefully something that can easily be taken care of.
What is his name?

GOOD NEWS....

turns out Sherman will be fine....he was starving when i got him home sat (2.5 hour car ride) and thus ate the first thing in site...which wasn't what he was used to and made him sick, thus his refusal to eat again...

John (my boy friend) gave him some cottage cheese which he scarfed, and the vet gave him a ball of can food which he scarfed as well. she said he had a mild fever and gave him a antibiotic shot (didn't like that much) and suggested we go ahead and get the brand he was eating (turns out the WalMart is closer to the new house than I thought - we justed moved so my frame of reference is still the old place sometimes)
so we scooted down there, got some canned food and the WalMart chow and John called just as I was pulling back into work - Sherman scarfed the canned food, nibbled the chow and is happy again

vet also said to feed him a couple tablespoonfuls every 1/2 hour or so for a couple
days to get him back into it and he should be fine.

WHEW....thanks for all the quick responses and support looking forward to less stressful interactions with you in the future

having a new puppy is more stressful than a new baby !!
