I agree with I warned them but........! unfortunately the laws in these two states. He has had several experience with cases in where people have had these signs posted. My cousin has two cocker's and one nipped a kid (1 mo ago) he had one of these signs, not because the dog are mean but just becausse he thought it would keep people out. Apparently the neighbors didn't care, thier kid went into his yard (climbed the fence gate was was locked) and now cousin is being sued. His finger was bit no stitches or nothing...these signs ARE against him now. We shall see.... |
WOW! I didn't know that was the law in those states...interesting yet scary really. Canada's legal system isn't anything like the US's in that ppl can't just sue other ppl for crazy things. I've heard that in the US a burglar can sue YOU if they get injured while breaking into YOUR home!! That kind of case would just get laughed out of Canadian courts...I don't think it would even make it there.
As for posting signs...on Vancouver Island it seems to be the norm. All of my friends/familiy who have large breed dogs will put at least one sign up near their home. My dh is from Toronto and he did the same there. I guess every area, town, country etc are just different. Our GS nipped the newspaper boy when I was a kid BUT it was in our yard and the kid was poking his fingers through the fence to tease the dog. Cops said kids own fault for being #1. stupid and #2. we had a warning sign and he was certainly old enough to read. Guess it just depends what the laws and/or norm is in your region.
Another popular sign here instead of "Beware of Dog" is simply a sign that reads "Guard Dog on Duty". Maybe not quite as scary as "beware" but still lets ppl know there's a BIG dog lurking. haha!
