Best collar for puppy?

We just brought Mook home on Sunday, and I need some help with what kind of collar we should get him. We have a chain link one for training (we haven't used it at all yet) and I read the recent posts about dogs playing together and getting tangled up together. Our nine year old, Veg, has a thick leather collar that he wears (about two inches). What should we look for for the puppy? Tomorrow is his first checkup with our vet, and I'm guessing that he should be on a leash and collar when we go. He'll be eight weeks tomorrow) Thanks, everyone!

An eight week old puppy should be on a flat buckle collar, probably about 3/4 " width. Make sure you attach an ID tag with your name, address, and phone #.

Re: Best collar for puppy?

This is the collar I got for my little girl (Just 2 weeks now!)
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...&N=2001+113520

I got the Quick Klip. I bought this rather then the ones at Wal-Mart or like stores because: Quick-Klip Collar is easier than a buckle on your fingers because of its interlocking, spring-action closure. Based on same design as coastguard-approved lifejacket closures. Locks and unlocks easily, but ONLY when you want it to. Quick-Klips are guaranteed for life not to break or come open on their own.

I wanted something that I can walk to her crate, snap it on real quick and take her outside. When she's older I will go to a nice leather buckle but I needed something fast for potty training. She's going to grow out of this fast, so I bought 2 sizes in the same color with the matching 6ft leash. I am hoping by a quick on off collar it will make human error with taking to much time getting her outside smaller.

Re: Best collar for puppy?

Thanks for the quick reply! Is the collar nylon? I don't want to invest in leather yet since he'll be growing so quickly...

They grow so fast that I didn't want to invest in anything too costly either until the dog grew a bit.

At 8 weeks I used a little, black, nylon, flat buckle collar. It was lightweight and adjustable so he could wear it for a while. I look at it now and have to laugh. It's hard to believe my dog was that small!

Re: Best collar for puppy?

For the collar I posted it is nylon, it is only $2.99 for the smallest size (which I bought for my puppy's first collar) and $3.99 for the next size up. The $4.99 collar will fit up to 30'' neck. I plan on getting a more expensive collar when she's older, but like you didn't want to spend $20-$50 dollars every other month as she grows. Once she gets bigger and isn't growing so much, I have several nice sites for fancy collars. Untill then, these collars come in 16 different colors!

Re: Best collar for puppy?

I too just took alook at Harley first collar. I could not believe he was ever that small, at 6 months of age now, he has a 20 inch neck. Closer to adut hood, I will invest in a nice leather collar, for now he still has a nice nylon collar
