11 week rottweiler-growling and biting

I have an 11 wk old female rottie, she is biting and growling all the time. She is attending puppy school, and we have been doing all the things-telling her no consistently, being firm, having many chew toys. Her growling is pretty constant when I am taking her away from something she should not be doing, or just petting her. Last night it took me 5 minutes to calm her down. I have had Akitas in the past and have not expereinced this problem. Is this normal Rottie behavior as a puppy-and am I doing the right things to change her behavior? Any suggestions would be great. I can handle her now, but am concerned as she will get bigger very soon.

Re: 11 week rottweiler-growling and biting

toratazlee - you are not alone - our girl will be 14 weeks tomorrow and she does the same thing - we notice it happens more when she is tired - she seems to get overtired and instead of taking a nap she will go on a rampage of biting and sometimes growling - she bit me so hard last night I was shocked. I put her in her crate with a kong and she didn;t even get all the cream cheese out of it before she was asleep - try giving her a time out when she starts. I know that if we try to give her a shake she will stop for the moment but come back harder - she thinks its a game - but the time out works and even if it is only for 15 min or 1/2 hour when she comes out of the crate she is refreshed and in a better mood.

Thank you for your response-Thinking about it-I agree that she tends to only get out of control when she is tired at night. I will try the time out immed.

Re: 11 week rottweiler-growling and biting

The only thing that is hard to do is to make sure you don;t put her in her crate for punishment (which I am sure you already know) Last night after she bit a lotta too hard I put her through 2 minutes of sits and downs and such and gave her her kong and put her to bed - the temptation was to put her in immediately but I don;t want her crate to be punishment...I find myself wishing away her puppyhood sometimes...
