how do i stop 9 wk puppy from biting?

I have no major complaints about my puppy. He is 9 weeks old, turning 10 on thursday..hes a lovely boy...and he's very smart. I have thought him some basic things..like sit, drop..let go..etc..but he likes to mouth. Sometimes he gets so excited when we play he looks at me...then runs up to me in full speed, flips near my legs on his back and his mouth is opening and closing just reaching out for my hand to grab on..he doesnt bite very hard...its fairly gentle and i always correct him with a NO..he lets go when he hears a no (most cases) but then a few seconds later goes at it again..then he bites his own foot ...he has plenty of jew toys...my question is should i be more stricter with the nos? I dont yell at him or shake him when he does it and i dont know if i should... I just say it firmly nooo
Also what were your puppies like? how long did they mouth for? How did you get them to stop;)? Thanks

Re: how do i stop this behaviour

You have to start working on NO BITE. When he bites you scream OWWWWWWWWWWWWW and ignore for a few seconds.

However do not shake him. Look up No Bite and you will find a lot of great advice. And puppies do bite so do not worry too much!

How can he even reach your hand if he is on the floor and especially on his back? Don't put that temptation of waving hands within the chompers reach. Glance at him and walk away. He's having a frolic which is great fun but there is no reason for you to offer your hand when he's on a tear.

I agree with others. Just redirect him to something he is allowed to chew on and don't tempt him with the things he shouldn't......LIKE SKIN.....

Sounds like pretty normal puppy play.......

No need to worry! Our boy is now turning 5 months and I posted the same question here when he was your pups age. We constantly worked on the "No Bite!" and redirecting. He only does it now when he gets extremely worked up and really only sometimes then. Before you know it, it will have stopped and you'll be here asking other questions. Stick with the forum. I have learned so much in the short time I have been here!

Re: how do i stop 9 wk puppy from biting?

I have a 4 month old Rotty, named Brad. He is learning now what No Bite means, My mom tryed to gently hold his mouth together and tell him no bite, someone suggested tapping him on the end of the nose. He doesnt really like biting on me its more or less everyone elses ankles. I think he will grow out of it, so I just tell him no bite and give him one of his toys.

young pups don't know what is acceptable and what is not, it is your job to teach them this. This goes for all behaviour, not just the biting. It is not fair, and confusing to the pup if you change the rules in the middle of the game. So think about what you want from your full grown, 100# adult dog, and set those rules in place NOW.

No chewing on skin, EVER. No "up on the sofa" or bed, unless you like to sit and sleep on the floor!, and start teaching some basic manners, like sharing toys and food.

Our pup at 12 weeks old was house trained and did not bite any of us, because we had a clear set of rules from day 1!

Have fun with your pup, they don't stay this way for long!!!

Re: how do i stop 9 wk puppy from biting?

Keep in mind that when he is all worked up is not the time to be rubbing his belly. That should only take place when he is calm and relaxed. Cuddling is not particularly a dog thing either. Not sure what you consider cuddling, but if he thinks you are starting a game or wrestling then, yes, he is going to be using his mouth as that is his option for such things.

Instead, teach him a fetch game and do something useful with him like practicing puppy sit ups and fast sits and ball. Those are things that will engage a pup, not cuddles.

Re: how do i stop 9 wk puppy from biting?

My rotty is four months, he stills likes to go at our ankles or hands sometimes. He is getting better. Someone gave me the advice to get him a Kong and stuff it with treats or peanut butter, that will occupy him for a while. Also, give him some ice to chew on because he is teething.

Thanks for the help. I've tried most of it except for the hand through the collar. I will give it a try.
