Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

I have noticed that since I got my puppy (she's 7 mo now) she has always had a "Betty Boop" kind of swing with her rear. When she walks at a trot orruns it is not evident, but when she lazily walks or just gets up from napping or is just walking slowly around the house her butt swings back and forth. She lays with her legs in the "frog" position (on her tummy) with no problems. She doesn't seem to favor anything. The last time at the vet he checked both rear legs and said the one was good, but he felt a slight click in the other. When she gets nudered we will be taking x-rays and seeing how things are internaly. My question is do rotty's have a tendency to have this walking behavior? thank you for the feedback.

My rottn boy- he is 12 now- does it too- he has the "can i have fries with that shake" walk. He has always had it and when we took him a long time ago for shots and asked about it there was nothing wrong with his hips or anything thats just him.

Re: Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

I would be more concerned with the click than the sway. Our boy's hip clicked to where we could feel it, and sometimes even hear it, when he walked. Turned out he was severely dysplastic. If that is ever the case, that you notice the click, or signs of discomfort on her part, I personally would get her x-rayed sooner than later.

No vet, regardless of how clever they are, can state a dog clear of HD without an xray. If you have any questions get a film made. Don't count upon "feeling" "watching" or any other type of observation. It takes a film.

Re: Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

My almost 6 year old male has more sway in his step than Marilyn Monroe possibly ever had...and Baron (almost 2 years old) is a close second in the "swaying butt when walking" department. Both have good hips, although Ben does have a few pops in his joints when he first gets up - like me!

when we took him for his shots and asked about it............. is what was said. The implication that asking covers it. Many vets thinking they are being conservative with their clients budget just give an off the cuff answer especially if there is not functional obvious problems. That might suffice, but it should not be construed to mean the dog does not have any joint disorders.

I know, and was not arguing that, but making sure that someone else doesn't think that the xrays are not part of actually knowing how their dog is.

Re: Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

my two dogs both wiggle when they walk, but the motion is vastly different. I would have a hard time describing it, but the one with HD is somewhat tucked in at the rear and motion is side to side as she pivots her feet as she walks. the one without HD has a straight back, and very sure, strong springy motion and his rear moves side to side from the bounce when he walks

Re: Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

The wiggle, sashay, bear waddle at a walk is a hallmark trait of a Rottweiler walk. They are built to trot and at a trot is when they should have no wiggle, waddle etc. But at a walk all Rottweilers will have that Bear butt

But any clicking or pooping on more than a one time thing happening is not normal

Re: Please help with puppy Rotty walk...

At our house we have always called it the "Rott Walk". My girls have always had more swing then my boys. The clicking I would get checked out.
