Hello everyone, New here. Please help with biting puppy

Hello everyone my name is John. I just got a 4 month old male Rottie. I am calling him TyRoc (combination of my other two Rotties Tyson and Roxie who both passed away of old age, 10 and 13 respectively)

Both of my Rotties never bit as much as this 4 month old Rottie and no matter how much I say OW or NO, he continues to do so. I only had him for 3 days now and I have been working with him everyday for about 5- 10 minutes 3-5 x a day.

How long should I expect him to continue to go through this phase? As I said my other two Rotties didn't go through this at all. Tyson I got him at 6 months, he must have had passed that stage and Roxie was Tyson's daughter so I worked her extremely early and never had a nipping issue.

Any tips, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance.

Re: Hello everyone, New here. Please help with biting puppy

Welcome TyRoc ~ My pup was a biter and will still try it from time to time. The best suggestion that I can offer is to carry around a fun alternative. When you pup bites at you, give the routine "ouch" or "uh-uh" but then quickly offer him an animated toy. For my pup an old rag was the best deterrent. I would wiggle it in front of his nose and let him chase us to grab hold of it. Then we would play tug. I would praise him for catching the rag and offer him a treat. This is also when I taught him the "drop it" command.

To this day, I will keep some sort of toy nearby in case I need to redirect. The biting does slow WAY DOWN once they get their adult teeth in.

Also, the chewing might be to ease the discomfort of teething. Our pup really enjoyed frozen treats while teething. Items such as frozen carrots, hotdogs, string cheese, and raw chicken. I would also wet an old rag and freeze it for him to chew on.

Thanks, appreciate your feed back. Have a question does it always take several hours just to post a thread on here? I posted this question roughly 2.5 hours ago, but it did not show up till now.

When a thread is titled correctly and posted in the correct forum, it will be approved sooner. When a thread title is vague and the thread is posted in the wrong forum, it will sit in the queue until a Moderator is available to edit the title and move the thread to the proper forum.

Re: Hello everyone, New here. Please help with biting puppy

Hi John, I am new to the forum but also a new Rottie owner. Our pup did the same ! We got her at 4 months and she did the whole play biting thing and at times it was quite frenzied ! I tried the yelping and other things people had suggested but what worked for us was to teach her to calm down. I would take her by the collar, make her sit, while standing over her and telling her to calm down. She is 7 months now and very rarely does it these days but if she does we just use the 'calm down' and it stops it very quickly

Of course, who knows how this pup was treated for his biting before you got him. 4 months is kind of late in the game but it is better than nothing. Just keep it up and soon he will be responding. With Gunnar it just sort of stopped all of a sudden and is not an issue any longer. Good luck.

Take a pet bottle & put some pennies or pebbles inside. Wiggle it when the puppy bites you. You can use this method to stop the unwanted behaviours. Praise a lot for the good manners.

Re: Hello everyone, New here. Please help with biting puppy

I seem remember reading a post where someone's rottie wasn't bothered by a "shake can" and after some curiosity the first time just ignored it... i think depending on the dog's experiences and temperament it may not be the most effective method.

NikoJ's advice is sound and has had reported success from many members here. It requires time and consistency to work. The essence of it is you are both stopping the behavior and immediately showing the dog what is expected / acceptable. Just

Re: Hello everyone, New here. Please help with biting puppy

Really appreciate all the advice and suggestions.

It seems the yelling out OWW really loud when he nipples on my hand, leg, feet etc etc, is actually starting to work slowly but surely.

I got TyRoc from a breeder and he was around other pups/dogs and from what I am readings pups play with each other by biting, but if one pup bites the other too hard, the other puppy yelps, which stops the playing and the biting pup, realizes that biting too hard stops the fun/playing.

Another thing I read was, if the pups bites the mother too hard she growls or bites him by the scruff, said by mimicking this, the pup will learn as well.

I am glad I found this place Its been awhile since I had a Rottie and I forgot a lot about the simple things.
