growling puppy

i got a 6 and a half week old rott male. he does alot of growling besides play growling mainly when we try to pick him up. this is our first rott and we r reading books bout training him 1 of the books says to pick him up by the scruff of the neck like the mom would and give him a slight shake and that seems to stop him at the time. the mom and dad are both really friendly. i was wondering if there was anything else we should do or keep doing what we are doing

Re: growling puppy

Oh, dear. I wish you'd found RDN before you brought your puppy home. At 6-1/2 weeks he left his mother and sibs too young. No good breeder would send a puppy home so young and especially not a first time Rottie owner.

The good thing is you found RDN--the people here know their stuff and will do their best to help you.

Firstly, please stop scruffing your puppy. You're not a dog and treating your puppy like you're a dog is foolish. Make this forum, Puppy Development, your friend. Start methodically reading thru the postings here. You'll find a wealth of info on how to interact properly with your puppy.

You also must start looking for a Puppy K class and get yourself and your puppy into class. You can bring your puppy to class when he's 8 weeks old.

Re: growling puppy

But also make sure that your pup has all of his shots. Most classes want you to bring the shot records with you when you start the class. I wouldn't take the puppy around alot of dogs until he has had a few shots under his belt. 6 weeks is way to young. But the good thing is that you can start trainging now, make it fun and enjoy the rewards of having a loving companion.
