Question Leash biting

How can I stop my 4 month old to stop biting on the leash? Everytime we are outside he is forever biting on his leash and trying to play tug of war with me. I usually just drop the leash and walk away into the house where he follows me back in. Is there another way for me to stop this behavior?

Re: Leash biting

I used treats, lots and lots of treats. She forgets about the leash and now she's perfectly fine.

Re: Leash biting

I'm not sure if this is correct or not, I can't even remember where I heard it, but I thought that I heard that it is also a sign of the dog trying to dominate? Again, I don't know that for sure, but I know that Marley does it too, when we go for a walk. I just say" "stop it" & pull the leach a little. Then she gets the picture & we move on.

Another trick is to spray the lease with bitter apple.

Re: Leash biting

I am no expert and I don't know if it is just a fluke for now or not but I was having the same problem with Honda, and everytime he started chewing and/or tugging on the leash I made him sit and stay for a bit and did this very consistently every time and he has not done it at all in three days.(boy I hope it isn't a fluke, lol) I think maybe he figured it was more fun to keep walking than to have to sit and do nothing.I also keep a pocket of treats with me and when he is walking nice he gets a tidbit as well.Just my two cents, good luck!

Re: Leash biting

Marli bites the leash as we are walking through the house to get to the door. It's like she only knows how to walk properly on leash when we are outside. You should see her...

She's jumping, biting the leash then I say sit once we get to the door so that I may go out first. She listens and as soon as we are out the door she is a calm obedient puppy!

I'm just working on her acting the same in the house on leash. It's so weird.

I guess I will try the bitter apple as suggested.

Re: Leash biting

I stop and ignore her when she starts the leash biting/tugging. When she gets bored, stops and looks at me, I give her a "Good girl!" and a cookie then we keep walking. My theory is that it takes two to play the game.

Re: Leash biting

A chain leash worked with all my dogs. It put an end to it and I was able to switch back to cloth and leather. They must have forgotten about biting their leash! Good luck, it will stop.

Re: Leash biting

I finally used the bitter apple and he hates it. It has helped at time when we are outside. How often do I have to spray the leash to take effect? I'm also focusing on telling him to leave it and he's doing well with it. I don't use the bitter apple as much.
