puppy loves chewing another dog's ears

Hello! My 5.5 month old female puppy loves to play with my other female adult dog ... only thing is rottie puppy loves to chew on her ears until she cries out in pain. How do I stop this fixation of the ears?? Would appreciate any advice. Btw, I'm enjoying every bit of information here on rotties.

Re: puppy loves chewing another dog's ears

Given that she is chewing on another dog.....I should THINK that the other dog would be in the best position to correct the little nipper......My pups have all tried at one time or another, to chew on an older dog and have typically been snapped back at, pinned to the ground and ROARED at, or actually bitten back.....this is typically pretty effective......none of my adults have ever allowed chewing to continue for more than a one time occasion.

HOWEVER if you have a really laid back adult who wouldn't dream of correcting the puppy....then its up to you.....I would grab a toy put it in her mouth and redirect her onto something more appropriate to chew on....and give her time outs for short durations if she gets too rowdy.

Also I would step up her exercise a bit....a tired puppy is a GREAT puppy

Re: puppy loves chewing another dog's ears

I have the same problem with Zooey. It was bad enough that my adult's ear infections were getting worse and she had scabs. I let it go for a while, thinking that Fran would correct her, but she never did. So now I redirect. I am going to ask the vet if it's OK to spray Fran's ears with Bitter Apple or Yuck though.

Re: puppy loves chewing another dog's ears

ear biting is a sign of dominance for dogs, and you don't want your puppy running the household especially when they grow up to be very big and strong dogs.

Re: puppy loves chewing another dog's ears

Yes I did think it is a sign of dominance. My other dog tolerates it until she starts getting annoyed and would lightly bite back, play-fighting and chase her around but generally she's a very docile dog as compared to Misha who is exerting her dominance as she gets older and bigger.
