| Puppy Behavior with Toddler We just got a 14 week old male rottie puppy a few days ago. We lost our 7yr female rottie to cancer almost 4 months ago and were definitely ready to have a dog in our lives again. We also have a 21 month old son who adores dogs. Our pup is displaying usual puppy tendencies but it seems to be scaring our son. Understandably so because there has been a lot of nipping while playing. The boys are just about the same size. We've tried correcting and diverting our pup to no avail. HELP! |

| Re: Puppy Behavior with Toddler You have a baby who is only 21 months old, you have a 14 week old puppy, which one do you think understands what you are asking of them? I bet the farm that NEITHER one has a clue on what you are requiring. Keep the pup away from the baby, work with the puppy to TEACH him what is acceptable (positive motivation, make it fun) and don't let your baby "play" with the pup. Puppies have sharp little teeth that could hurt your child. Please read all the stickys in the Puppy Development forum for they are packed with much informative information that you could use as learning tools.

| Re: Puppy Behavior with Toddler You are actually raising two toddlers together one which will age quicker than the other (puppy). It can be done but you must have the time to put into the puppy as well as the child so they both grow up correctly. |

| Re: Puppy Behavior with Toddler I have a two year old son as well.(just turned two a couple of weeks ago)I don't keep them separated all the time but I do use the time (which is always supervised) to help both of them learn their manners. My son is not allowed to play with Honda as of yet meaning I only allow time spent to be calm and if it goes into a riled up state in any way I remove my son by picking him up or getting him interested in his blocks or something and help our pup to chill out by getting him his chew"toys"to.I am by no means an expert and don't even know if I am doing it right but I wanted to chime in and just let you know your not alone in this camp, lol.BTW Honda is twelve weeks old now just so you know he is about the same age as your pup as well.Good luck! |
