puppy fighting

I own two dogs, one a lap dog that weight 15 lbs and is 1 yr old, and the other a rotty puppy that is 11-12 weeks old. My question is about my dogs fighting. I know it is just puppies playing but sometimes the fighting gets out of hand with growling and hard biting. Right know it's not that much of a problem since my rotty puppy isn't big enough yet to seriously hurt my other dog. How do I put a stop to this befor it becomes a problem or is it just inicent puppy play.

Re: puppy fighting

When they seem to be getting too rough I would stop them. Seperate them for a while or distract them with a toy.

Re: puppy fighting

Thanks I will try that. They do get along awsome it's just every once in awhile the playing seems to become more fighting than anything.

Re: puppy fighting

Your the pack leader u need to correct the pup that starts the rough play as soon as he/she does it.. i would stop it immediately by standing between them pulling them apart and give a timout. Stay consistent and the pup will get the message that the behaviour is completely unnacceptable and he/she will begin to respect that wat u say goes.

Re: puppy fighting

I'm not a big fan of using crates as a sort of discipline. If your pup thinks he's in trouble and he's put in there, he'll probably think of it as jail instead of his haven. Separate rooms would work.

Re: puppy fighting

I have a 90 pound 9 month old male rott, and recently I adopted a 16 pound shiba inu-chihuahua mix. Eubie (the rottie) took a liking to him right away, and loves to play with him. Spike is so feisty, he tells Eubie off when he's getting too rough. Eubie loves to pounce on him, but he always lands with his legs over Spike, not on top of him. When Spike has had enough, he hides under the chair where Eubie can't get him, but then he always comes back for more play.
