Question What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

I have 6 month old male puppy. I have been training him using various rewards (i.e. treats, toys, verbal praise, physical contact). But now I am looking for new treats for training because I feel he has grown tired of his current treats. At the moment I am giving him small puppy biscuits and small moist treats called Zukes.

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

I find it works best to use a variety of treats and change them up, even during one training session....that way the puppy/dog is kept ever-guessing what goodie will come for the next best behavior.

I use cut up hot dogs (nuked a bit so they're not slippery), cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese, cut into small pieces, string cheese, bits of chicken or steak, home-made liver leather and salmon strips, and even kibble. I mix it up a lot and always have at least 3 kinds when we go to class.

I like the Charlie Bear Dog treats. They can be found at Petco or PetSmart.

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

When we were training Static we used small liver treats mostly, but he also loved frozen green beans, small pieces of carrot, small pieces of cheese .... and if we had left over roasted meats he would do ANYTHING for bits of that!! It took about ten minutes of training at a very young age to teach him how to sit 'cause we used small bites of turkey breast!
Even now, if Static hears a carrot being chopped he starts drooling. He likes the crunch - and they help clean his teeth! Not much nutritional value I don't think though, cause he poops them pretty much straight out!!

We can get him to do almost anything for a fish oil capsule as well (don't ask me why).
I don't know if it is the actual treat, or the pats and cuddles he gets when he is good and listens to us.
But we had very little training problems with him at all. He is my little(!) angel!!

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

I bought some puppy training treats at my pet shop for 7.50 .

There were about 100 in a tub and they were about half an inch long.

I too like Charlie Bear Dog treats for some things. I use different treats for different situations. Charlie Bear treats for low value treats, when she has to be calm and able to think through the whole thing. I use sharp cheddar (I like it better than string cheese or not sharp which is important since I bite off pieces) cheese sticks, they smell quite strongly and are a quite high value treat. Very rarely I also use a piece summer sausage, salami, or something of the sort. That's VERY high value and she'd crawl out of her skin to get one if she could. It works for recall and things like that otherwise those are usually too high value, she looses her brain. A couple of hours before a show I realized I could use it and then eat a piece myself before I walked into the ring. She still got a bit over excited from the smell on my breath, so that idea has to be refined. LOL

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

For high value treats, I like summer sausage, cut in very small pieces, just like Hast.

I keep a few pieces in my mouth to spit at Zeus when he does well. This keeps him looking at my face and focused when we heel. Needless to say, the treats better taste pretty good if I'm planning to put them in my mouth first.

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

Chili is of the opinion that anything she has to work for, even kibble, is high value just because she's working for it, LOL! In addition to the cheese, hot dogs, liver, etc. I listed above, I've "inherited" 12 bags of Charlee Bears from our club trial and find that I like them (and so does Chili). They are neat and tidy, don't melt in your pocket, and even stay crispy when held in your mouth (I spit rewards a lot).

I just bought a couple packages of chicken gizzards to slice and roast with some garlic powder - we'll see how those turn out.

Charlee Bear treats are good...they seem to be tasty and are low in calories. The only thing I find is that because they are round and fairly small....my dogs tend to gulp them, and not chew. They often choke on them. I use the Charlee Bears more for Kong stuffing. A bit of PB smeared inside the Kong with some CB thrown in...and it gives them a "project".

Post Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

Right now we are using left over Christmas turkey for training treats. After eating turkey for two days...we were tired of it. I sliced up the nice white meat into tiny cubes and froze it in small baggies. I probably froze 10 small bags.
Now, I pull out a bag, and have been using the turkey for training, and for tracking. Good way to get rid of leftovers, and healthy too.

Re: What are the best training treats for Rottie Puppies?

Lately I've used mainly carrot and apple pieces for treats... funny but it seems the value has increased so carrots are a favorite treat now. Makes it interesting to cook. LOL
