chicken heads!! help!!

i am out of town right now with one of my rotties. i usually feed her chicken or turkey necks. the only place i could find with necks was a mexican butcher shop and the necks come with the heads on..ugh.
has anyone had experience with this? do you feed the necks with the heads on or do you cut off the head? do chickens have anything like mad cow disease which is transmitted through brain tissue?
help.

We occasionally get a neck that still has a head but we feed it to them anyway. I don't think you have anything to worry about. My dogs eat birds, rabbits even moles. After picking up poop today we discovered that they have found ripe persimmons and have been eating lots of them. They're pooping the seeds. We have 2 trees behind the dam and since we've cleared the area they're having lots of adventures. We're all fenced but we are careful not to let them all run free together. Someone posted a long time ago that 1 dog is a dog..2 dogs are a pack. I consider 4 a big pack. Sorry I got off the subject. I wouldn't worry about a chicken head but I'm not a vet.

Any time one of my dogs finds a dead bird they eat pretty much everything - from head to feathers. So far nobody's showed any ill effects. I'll admit, though, if I opened a package and found a chicken head in there I'd be grossed out - *regular* raw chicken parts are gross enough for me as it is. Belle has caught and eaten several mice and all of the dogs finished off some left-over parts from a rabbit's nest that something else had already raided.

Well although I do not feed barf, my chow/mix caught fresh kill almost everyday before we moved to an apartment and I never found left over heads of anything...... She is also 16 years old and I believe those fresh kills are probably a big part of that...;)

Just make sure you shut the chickens eyes first......:p

I'm with you Barbara. I buy the necks in 40lb boxes. If I reached in & grabbed a handfull of necks & came up with a chicken head, I'm afraid I would just lose it. Ignorance can sometimes be bliss, now I'm gong to be expecting to see a head at any moment.

when I was a little girl, just after the caveman era..My Dad hunted a lot. Most of the meat that we ate came from his hunting or the chickens they raised. My sister and I loved when he killed squirrels. Mom breaded and browned the parts along with the heads. She and I fought over the heads..we would eat any meat on them and using a knife or our teeth..we would open the head and eat the brains. To this day..one of my favorite meals is brains and eggs.Along with biscuits and gravy. That's why I'm so smart!

Hey, Nancy may be grossed out by chicken heads but she eats raw meat and there's a rumor circulating that those bones she buys are not really for the dogs. Have you noticed how clean and white her teeth are. :))

You mean the teeth I have left? :D (I only eat raw beef; after all, I'm a Texan ;).) I tell you, when my dogs find something out back to start eating on I usually just look the other way! I don't want to know what it is! They like it when I have the hot wire on since it electrocutes birds for them to dine on . . .

You guys are too much!

Well I don't think I could feed heads but Czar does get chicken feet. Does anyone else feed the feet? They are too much, they look like alien's hands. The very first time I got them I took one into the den where my son was sitting and came behind him with this foot and I made it look like a hand, at first he jumped but then he wanted a better look and he loved it. What we don't feed our dogs, LOL!
