Petcurean dog food?

Has anybody used it? A fellow club member uses it (along with raw) and he says it's the closest thing to raw. Here's a link to their website with an ingredient list. I'd like some opinions please.
NOW! Adult Grain Free Dog Foog

Re: Petcurean dog food?

I follow the raw prey model and thus wouldn't feed it.

The ingredient list from the link you posted:

De-boned Turkey, Potato Flour, Pea, Apple, Whole Dried Egg, Pea Fibre, Tomato, Potato, Flaxseed, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E) , Natural Flavors, De-boned Salmon, De-boned Duck, Sun Dried Alfalfa, Coconut Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Lecithin, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Fruit: ( pumpkin, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, papaya, pineapple), Vegetables: ( carrots, lentil beans, broccoli, spinach, alfalfa sprouts, garlic),...

Too many non meat ingredients. And if I'm giving my dogs oil, I'd prefer them to be fish oils, not canola or coconut oils.

Re: Petcurean dog food?

I think the ingredients look good but after having done lots of research on dog foods, the first ingredient is deboned turkey, which is inclusive of water weight, so once dried out I believe this would not be the main ingredient in the food which would make the main content potato flour.
I think the meats contain about 80% water so after drying out the dog food this would be down on the list and I would think the meat content is not high enough.
I always look for the first ingredient to be a SPECIFIC meat or poultry meal, ie lamb meal, chicken meal,( NOT meat meal or poultry meal, which is non specific and meat meal could mean horse, dog, squirrel or anything else). Meal form means the water has already been removed when the ingredients are listed so it's highly likely the first ingredient listed is truly what it says.
I also don't like to see any foods with "flour" listed. I did like the fact that the product uses whole egg, as most use dried egg product. I did not see a calorie content either, which makes me wonder. MOST premium foods are high in calorie content, having at least 425 per cup. If you look at the calorie content of midgrade foods the calories are usually about 320-340. I think the Innova is over 500 a cup, this is why you can feed so much less.
Now if you were going to feed raw meat along with this food I can see where the variety of fruits and veggies added may be a good thing. I don't know anything really about feeding raw, I am others with expertise in this area could comment on the mix.
Here is a great link that reviews dog foods, this is where I get my information, and this dog food may be reviewed here.

Re: Petcurean dog food?

I have fed the kitty version to the cats...who can't do grains but could afford to be on something with more "bulk". on evo and orijen, they truly believe they are starving with the little bit of food they eat to maintain a reasonable weight.

I haven't tried Bear on it as I can't seem to find anywhere on their website or food bags how much calories are in the food. Another thing holding me back is the fact that for a grainfree food there's very little protein when compared to Orijen or EVO that both have about 42% protein. The NOW food and even wellness CORE and Merrick's Before Grains hover around the 30% protein range. These foods are grain free but more expensive than something like Innova and when I figured it out with CORE, I'd be feeding Bear more per day (for the same amount of calories) so I'd be paying more for less essentially.

I strongly suspect this is an effect of the tainted dog food issue.
