Diamond Naturals chicken and rice

Does anyone know anything about this brand of food.

Does it look like a good food. The price is right 40# for $23

It's the exact same food as Costco's Kirkland brand. It's a mid-quality food...heavy on the grains. If cost is a big factor, and your dogs are doing well on it, then feed it. You could also add in some extra raw or cooked meat to raise the meat levels. Diamond has a poor reputation for quality control.

I have not fed any to my girls yet. I wanted to know if anyone knew anything about this food first. I just bought a bag of Healthwise chicken and oatmeal, and I am going to give this a try right now. My one girl itches a lot and has eye boogies, and my other girl has bad eye boogies. I figure it's the food (a not so good brand) and i am trying to get them on a good food that wont cost me an arm and a leg.

I have been feeding this food to my five dogs for the past few months with no problems. They appear healthy and happy, and I am not going broke feeding them (which is always a plus for me).

I actually wound up switching over on accident; the place I buy food was out of Canidae, which I was feeding, and I was out of dog food. The Diamond naturals chicken & rice was the only thing that was comparable. The dogs seemed to do well on it, so that's what we stayed with.

If your dogs are itchy and boogery on a chicken based food, sometimes switching the protein will help.
My dog has a sensitive tummy and does best on lamb and rice food.
The healthwise is a good food, if they continue to be itchy maybe a switch from chicken to lamb might be in order. But the Healthwise lamb and oatmeal contains chicken meal for some reason, so I havent tried it. I use California Natural lamb and rice, made by the same company and have great luck with it.
I wish I could use a multiple protein food, but for my guy it just isn't a good idea.

Hi dakota, i know that this is a late reply but, i just wanted to tell you that i have fed my past rotty, and currently feed titan diamond dog food and i dont have any problems with it. Maybe just alittle stinky back side but other than that, he is fine. Another brand that i found to be good is exceed dog food. I used to give it to my old rotty nico. Good luck.

But in your other post you wonder about why your puppy has "such a stinky backside. I mean really bad...." so it appears you are having problems.

Please spend time reading thru the postings here in Nutriton and Grooming. The food you're feeding is inferior and once you spend time reading the info posted in N&G you'll clearly understand why it's a miserable food.

I never heard of Exceed so I did a search on it.

It appears to be manufactured by Nestle's.

You are so right anglebunny. After reading and getting more info on the food i feel like a total loser for telling you and believeing that this food was one of the best. Man i feel horrible for giving you bum scoop. but now i know. God bless and I thank all of you for giving me the real deal.

Diamond Naturals are a better quality than the Diamond brand, but this still is a mid grade food.
I took a look at the calorie content and it is 368 per cup. If you look at the California Naturals chicken and rice it is 511 calories per cup. So if you figure your dogs calorie needs for the day, you certainly can feed quite a bit less of the California Natural food. I know it seems expensive when you just look at the price per bag, but the price per serving may just surprise you.
Cheaper isn't always cheaper.
I personally don't like anything that contains egg product, Which could be ground up egg shells for all I know. Also any food that contains beet pulp is not something I would want to use.

OT I know, but just wanted to comment that egg shells are good for a dog -- a good source of calcium. Many raw feeders feed whole eggs, shell and all, and let the dogs have a good time cracking and eating them.

I know that egg shells aren't bad for a dog, I give Dodge a whole egg occasionally, but I probably don't want them mixed into my kibble. I would rather see specifics listed. If I feed a whole egg, I know how much he is getting. On all the reviews I can read, it is better to see whole egg listed, egg product could by anything, yolks, whites, shell, membrane or dried egg powder.
And in this particular food it is listed even below the beet pulp, which I would NEVER consider in a good kibble.

you are absolutley right ms. sharon. with all the info that i recieved yesterday and today, i have started the process of taking him off diamond and going back to his original food that we had him on before. he was less stinky and his stool was much harder, not watery looking. thanks for all the help and info guys. we really do appreciate it.
