Vomitting after drinking water?

Hello everyone. I have a 9 1/2 month female American Rottweiler, after she drinks water she often vomits, I've tried to limit how much i put in her bowl at one time, I've tried the water sipper(she just sips it all until its gone), I've also tried ice that helps a little. But I've run out of ideas and I want her to have access to as much water as she wants but it's a little difficult to do because her vomitting...Please Help

Re: Vomitting after drinking water?

First, just want to make you aware that there is no such thing as an "American Rott" -- your Rott is American because it was born here, but other than that, there is no difference. Even if your Rott had German bloodlines and was born in the USA, it would be an American Rott. All Rotts across the globe are judged by the SAME standards. Don't mean to be picky but there are so many people that think there is a difference.

Anyway, on to your question...my boy throws up after drinking water sometimes still at 4 yo, but it's less frequent than when he was a pup. If he drinks and then jumps/runs around, he will throw it up. It seems to be centered around activity right before or after he drinks -- is that what you are experiencing? Is your pup just throwing up the water consumed or is she throwing up more than that? I know that I had to limit the amount of water he would consume after our walks when he was younger...let him only have a little bit at a time. Now, he's ok drinking what he wants after walks, but I still am careful not to get him riled up after he drinks at any time.

Re: Vomitting after drinking water?

Ice cubes have also helped us with this. Brewksi also has to have limited water, but on hot days or right after a long walk I'll give him a couple of ice cubes too. That way I know that he is getting hydrated but for some reason he can eat all the ice cubes he wants and not throw up! I also try to keep him calm right before and after giving him his water. He gets more excited for his water bowl to be filled than for his dinner!!

I get the same thing with Maxx getting excited with his water bowl. I also notice that they can surely drink a lot of water. So what i do is i limited the amount of water placed on his bowl and he is allow to drink only so much. Since he has amazed me on the amount he can drink, Dont need him to over do it as well.
So he is given enough water during the entire day, just limited the amount at a time.
Amaze how excited he gets when he sees water loll even more then food at times... loll

Re: Vomitting after drinking water?

Static sometimes throws up water too ( he is 21 months) but only if he is over exited from playing/exercising. I try to let him only have a enough to wet his mouth, until he stops puffing - and then he can have a nice long drink.
It happened today actually - but i think he was excited as it was a drink half way through a walk - and there were a couple of kids patting (stroking) him - he gets over excited sometimes!!!
I think you might find that your pup will eventually settle down and it wont happen so much.

It can also happen just before or after they've eaten their meals. If necessary, I will give them a little water just before/after a meal then wait about an 1-2 hrs to give them much more water.

Anything frozen is like syrup of ipecac for Chili....it took me awhile to figure it out, but if I give her the tiniest bit (like 1/2 a tsp) of frozen "anything" she will hurl everything in her stomach within a minute! This is something new for her, I've always been able to give her a small bite of ice cream or a cube of her frozen raw without a problem, but no more!

LOL....good thing I didn't name her "Chilly", huh? As least she's living up to the name she DID get (and like a jalapeno, too!)

Mine does this too. What we have found that works for him is while he is drinking we call his name, forcing him to look up and take a breath. We find that he will throw up when he is drinking like crazy without a breath.

Re: Vomitting after drinking water?

Seems the younger ones gulp down too much water and like a baby one big burp will bring it all up! Yuckers!

Mine used to do that and so what I'd do is let her drink a little. Take the bowl and have her look up at me and I'd talk to her a bit until she burped. Then I'd give her a little more and repeat. It worked because there wasn't too much water at one time in her belly, no huge air bubbles and her head would be in an upright position.

Also, I've read but haven't tried it since my girl is older now and we don't encounter problems like this anymore, to not give water for @ 20 minutes after play/exercise so the dog isn't too wound up and still hyper.
