Real potent smell Over the past 1 1/2 months my pup has been stinking up her crate and and the house. I have been feeding her Canidae ALS for about 5 months with no problems but lately she has been giving off a pretty bad stench so I figured i ask a question or 2. Is it possible that the canidae all of the sudden is affecting her to smell? She is also shedding alot which i figured was because summer is here but could her food be doing this to her? She is still in her first season but this started about a month before. She really seems to stink up her kennel im cleaning it everyday or everyother day. Even a day after a bath she has the same stink to her. Any suggestions? my other dog not rotti seems to be fine he hasn't changed a bit. Thanks

| Re: Real potent smell How old is she (when some people say "pup" they don't really mean puppy)? Anal glands always come to mind with situations like this.

Re: Real potent smell She is 9 1/2 months we were at the vet 2 weeks ago for a check up on my sharpei and brought her along and i asked the vet and he reccommended i switch her food to the food he has i think it was scientific diet or something.

Re: Real potent smell Check her ears. Sometimes a bad smell comes from an ear infection. If it's not that end, check the other, her anal glands may need to be expressed or they are expressing them selves on her bedding. Lola once expressed them on the couch and we all smelled like dead fish until we got it off. If her skin smells. it could be her diet. My guess is to wait and see after she is completely out of her heat cycle.

Re: Real potent smell Thanks I was thinking mayb her heat has something to do with it but she started smellin about amonth before the first day we noticed spotting. Her ears are clean as a whistle and it doesn't seem to be her anal glands either just her coat smells. I think te best option for me is to wait till after her heat cycle and then if the scent persists change her diet. Any food suggestions for a 9 1/2 month old if it is her diet? Thanks

If you think a change of food may make a difference, then try her on Innova, or Wellness, Timberwolf Organics, California Natural or some other top quality food. Gina

Re: Real potent smell Thanks Gina i was definitley not changing over to science diet i was thinking about Innova or California natural. She's been getting a bath every 2 weeks now with shampoo and a blowdry and once a week with just water and a blow dry with a good brushing to try and take out all the dead hairs and she even smells better after only water. We'll see how she makes out when her heat is gone before making changes to her dietsince she has done well with canidae

Re: Real potent smell How long are you leaving her in her crate for?? I would definately change food immediatley. I have found Taste of the Wild brand, Roasted Fowl flavor works wonders for my dog. Also, if switching foods does not improve smell after a short time, you might try a apple cider vinegar rinse. It completely alleviated the odor on my dog. I use 1 cup apple cider vinegar to 1 large pitcher of water. I always wet my dog down before i apply this rinse. Make sure to not get into dogs eyes or on their private parts or bottom. Hope your baby feels better real soon.

Re: Real potent smell I am having the same problem with my 6 month old male, so I know with him it's not that he's in heat! I am wondering if it is his food as well. I'll see if switching him will change that. He has started shedding quite a bit too. Maybe it's the season? I live in FL and of course it's always wicked hot here, but he spends most of his time indoors. We bathe him about once a week, but he just had a bath Monday and is "odor-ific" enough to get another bath tomorrow! I'm sure that's not good to do, though, since it could dry out his skin. Any other suggestions besides switching his food?

Re: Real potent smell Make sure your keeping his ears clean that can really stink. I clean my dogs ears once a week but have started cleanin my girls ears on a daily basis and the stink has seemed to go away. I was told over the phone by my vet it was most likely some sort of yeast infection forming even though her ears looked clean and he told me to clean them daily and then i was given drops to put in her ears twice a day and the scent has gone away. She has pretty much stopped shedding an over bearing amount so i think it was just the changing seasons causing her to shed.

If you are trying to get the hair out, brush daily and if you must, use water and air dry.

Re: Real potent smell Vets recommend Science Diet (I'm told by a vet tech. friend) because they get 'kickbacks'. It seems the relationship between Vets and pet food companies is similar to that of the relationship between Doctors and pharmaceutical companies. They recommend that which is profitable for them to do so. In both cases it's a very sad thing for us, (and our pets) the health consumer. I'm blessed that my current 10 mo. old boy has virtually no odor. It's funny, my boyfriend and I were just discussing this earlier today.... that he doesn't smell like a normal dog. My last boy had a very 'doggy' odor, and when non-dog ppl came to my (very small) house they often said it smelled like 'big dog'. I don't advocate bathing often, it's just not good for them. If you love your rottie you may just have to live with the odor. Donna and Keli
