Innova

I just got a beautiful new pup... I am trying to find out if Innova is a good dog food. I went to the pet shop trying to get Orijen but they told me that Innova for a pup would probably be better because Orijen is too high in protein and is not good for a puppy. I should use Orijen after 6 months...

Is this true? Can I get some recommendations on good puppy food. I am trying to go RAW at some point but want to transition from a holistic food source...

Thanks for the help...

Re: Innova

Innova is a very good food. My crew is an Innova crew and all doing well on it. Yes, Orijen is a great food for adults but not reccommended for puppies.

Re: Innova

Actually - everything I have been reading says exactly the opposite...that the calcium/phosphorus ratio in Orijen is better for puppies and that Evo is better when they're adults.

Post Re: Innova

Innova is a good food, as is Orijen. The Orijen Large Breed Puppy is fine for a puppy, we have many forum members here that are raising their pups on it right now and are very happy with it.

Re: Innova

I didn't realize Orijen made a puppy formula. OOPs, I better pay more attention.

Re: Innova

the one thing that orijen formula doesn't make me quite comfortable is the amount of protein % it has for a growing pup. To my understanding too much protein can be bad as well, therefore i'm not quite comfortable feeding my young one such formula.
Maxx at the moment happens to be 4 months and he is doing fairly well on Innova, however i have decided to change him into wolf cub Solid gold which has a 26% of protein which is just find for a growing pup.
I have spoken to several folks who happen to have a lot of experience when it comes to dealing with pup in a young age n have advice me to stay with a certain % of protein, regardless the food (since not advertising with a certain food in particular) I have looked at different kibble, n theres plenty of good brands out there, it all depends with what you are comfortable with. I can understand to some raw is the ultimate thing to have in a pup's diet, however; i don't (n im sure others as wel) don't feel comfortable feeding that to a young growing puppy. Eventually perhaps i will mixed a good kibble with raw, but till then i'm just sharing my very small amount of experience with others. just mho n my .02 cents..

Re: Innova

Yes I am also thinking of going RAW at some point but want to stabalize the pup with kibble before hand.

The only thing about Innova is that it is not grain free and I have been hearing that the grain for dogs is no good...

Is it ok for puppies?

Re: Innova

if you want a grain free kibble diet, you have several brands out there that offer a good kibble. you have wellness, solid gold wolf cub and natural balance to name a few.

Re: Innova

I started mixing in raw (rabbit and vennison) to my 6 month old only this last week.
I always said I would wait until 6 months. She had always gotten Canidae, which is absolute garbage now by the way, but that is a whole other subject....so when i had to quit them all cold turkey on it, i just figured that that would be the best time to start mixing in the raw.

now they get the eagle pack holistic duck and oatmeal for breakfast and for dinner, i mix in either rabbit or venison. I have also bought canned bison and canned lamb with water. They like those, too.

It is a little more expensive, and when/if I go TOTALLY raw, it will get worse since we have 4 dogs total (only one rottie). They really love it, especially Miss Precious the Rottweiler. Not too much energy gain, but she never has gas and her stools are much better. Canidae was totally freaking these guys out. I haven't noticed a real increase in energy, but I have noticed that her coat is getting much shinier and she doesn't have eye boogers as bad.

If they keep liking it like this, maybe i will just do it in the evenings, so they will get a good variety and i wont have to go to all the trouble in the morning of preparing the raw stuff.

Re: Innova

i had been feeding Max Orijen since 8 weeks. it was all good untill about a month ago. he started gettin loose stools, my vet told me even the puppy formula is too much protein. since then i have been giving him half Orijen, and half Eagle Pack Holistic Puppy, and now he's doing great :) my 3 cents

The Innova EVO is grain free -- that is the formula I was referring to in my earlier post -- It's what I've used with my adult dogs and been happy with (they're currently on Orijen for variety and because I have a new pup in the house).

Re: Innova

My Rottie is 8months old. I am currently feeding Innova Adult (Green Bag). Was feeding Canidae but since they came out with the so called new and improved Rykers poops have went South. I want to when he is old enough (12 months I think) feed him Innova EVO Red Meat. Can I feed him Innova EVO that is not the Red Meat. I know the protein is high but I think the cal to ph ratio is ok. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....THANK

Re: Innova

We switched Sascha to Innova LBP about 2 mos ago and she's doing great on it. She was on Precise LBP and seemed to be fine but then all of sudden - loose bowel movements so I thought it best to switch and I hear a lot of good things about the Innova. I have no complaints and neither does our girl. We plan to switch her to Innova ALS in the next month or two.

No -- the cal:phos ratio for the Chicken formula is 2.55:1.57, and the RM formula is 2.09:1.26 -- so the RM is actually a little closer to ideal for a puppy. Your boy is right on the cusp of the major growth being done...I would hold out for just a bit longer if you can.

Innova (green bag) is a very good food. Just because there are grains in it does not make it bad or inferior. Dogs do digest and gain some nutritional benefit from grains, however you want to make sure that you're feeding more meat than grains. I believe Innova's formulas accomplish that.
