Chunks of Hair

I'm new to the forum. I've completed a search on "hair problems" and it appears that rotties are well known for major loss of hair. I've had my dog for about 3 months now. She is a bit over 2 years old. Her coat is nice and shiny and she seems happy enough, but she is shedding heaps of hair. Maybe this is normal, but it seems extreme. Her coat is even everywhere, but I can literally pull out chunks of hair. It's winter here so I would have thought this wouldn't happen. She's being fed a mixture of good quality kibbles and my own concoction (rice, kangaroo meat, carrot, celery, apple cider vinegar, canola oil). Should I be concerned? When I brush her, it just goes on and on and on and on.....

Rotties sure can shed! When my girls blow their coats I can pull tufts of hair from them, too.

Makes me feel better. Like I say, she is healthy and happy. I just thought that in winter, she wouldn't blow her coat. Then again, I've never had a rotty before. I've had 3 german shepherds previously so it was a huge decision to change breeds, but I have no regrets. Absolutely adorable.

Hi There,

Rotties do seem to shed a TON! They do shed twice a year and although I live in Washington state, my almost 6yr old female Rottie is shedding a ton too! I can grab chunks of hair around her tail. So, I wouldn't worry if your Rottie is happy and healthy!

Hee Hee we joke during Rita's shedding times that we could make a whole 'nother dog from all the hair that comes off her. I toss it out in the yard hoping a bird might use it to line a nest or three.

Re: Chunks of Hair

Glad this topic came up, Marley is doing this exact thing right now! LOL He's 10 months old so I was curious about this as well.

It's rather warm where we are.. yesterday was 90 and today about 88...so I was curious if this is one of the times they do shed?

Yea, I personally don't know the exact times, but I do know they shed twice a year. Sometimes it feels like all year long! lol.

Re: Chunks of Hair

Thank God I'm not alone!

Geez, my "stumpy" can drop loads of hair!

We did a brushing session for both dogs (the other is a Bichon, basically a white fur ball), and my rottie won in amount of hair attained!

Are you guys saying it's only going to get worse?

Re: Chunks of Hair

If, like me, you are a knitter, you can send the shed hair to vipfibers.com and they will wash it and spin it into yarn.

My Cyrus could clothe a country easily

I have never heard of that before! LOL. Does it look like real yarn when you're done??

tinyfox: I'm in Australia too and yes, they are shedding at the moment. I brush and comb my Rottweilers every couple of days just to keep the dust bunnies from rolling around the house.
