Dry Foods

AndOne707 - the Orijen Large Breed Puppy is a good choice. I fed my dog Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy (regular puppy not the Wolf Cub) until she was 18 months - half and half with prepared raw. She did great on it.
anything wrong in particular or not acceptable with the wolf cub formula ?
anything buyers beware with this ?
how about a mix of wolf cub and orijin ?? a good or bad idea??
btw thanks for all the great information.. I love this forum XD

btw thank you for pointing out on what needs to be in a high quality food. Hadn't really think about what the priority in all the ingredients are, n not just the very first one.

Chili's breeder likes her puppies on a 28% protein - Wolf Cub is 26%. Other than that, I never fed it so can't really comment, but am unaware of any big faux pas for using it.

I don't see any logic in mixing kibbles. Many people will rotate premium kibble throughout the year just to make sure bases are covered and one particular protein is not always the one being fed, so that may be something you'd like to do. You could choose 2-4 good puppy foods from different sources, buy in 15-30 lb quantities, and go to the next food on your list when you've used up a bag.

Re: A good kibble (advice )

I might just start doing that in order to see what he reacts to best.
Some of the things I have consider are
wolf cub formula
Innova and now Orijen
I was able to pick up a small try me back of puppy LB from Orijen and all i can say is he almost ate it all. He saw it as treats though loll.. I might just make the switch with a bit of raw from time to time to see what the results with Maxx are.

Re: A good kibble (advice )

I will preface to say I am a huge Orijen fan (shiny coats, smaller stools, healthy dogs) so I am just a bit biased. I did notice cost was mentioned. Although Orijen is expensive, it takes so little food it ends up not being a huge expense. My 10 yo 115 lb boy eats 1 cup am and 1 cup pm with the occasional tin of sardines, and evo 95% canned food (about 1/4 can) about 4 times a week in pm feeding. I think the canned is more for my benefit as I feel good giving them variety. My mom's 3 yo lean 118 lb boy eats 1 1/2 cups in am and 1-2 cups in pm depending on his activity level. again he is a large active boy and getting by on about 2 1/2-3 1/2 cups a day. I am truly a believer in Orijen since I started my dogs on it (about 9 mos now) my older dog who has an auto immune disease where his own body attacks his toenails (has a fancy name can't remember it) has been on 1000 mg of tetracycline to keep from having his toenails rot. Since being on Orijen I have cut the abx in 1/2. So yes I am the biggest Orijen cheerleader around. I am speaking from my own dogs and of course their will be the dog that is sensative to Orijen and hopefully something else as long as it is high quality is going to work.

Re: A good kibble (advice )

Thanks for the great feedback. I have started to mix a bit of orijen in his food (very picky eater) in order to make the transcition from one food to the other. Funny I expected to also hear feedback from solid gold wolf cub formula. But hardly anything except for the flock that someone has mentioned. Once this batch runs out I plan to keep him on one formula. One observation since I do give him a very small amount of canned halo salmon formula mixed in the pm with his kibble. Is the stool being a bit loose than just dry kibble. As well as the smell. Perhaps canned food isn't such a good thing; however it helps him eat all his entire food in the pm time.
