Dirty Eyes

My puppy Jolie (4 months) always has gunk in the corners of her eyes. Its not a large amount at a time, but theres always a little bit there. I checked and it doesnt collect under the bottom lid, just in the corner. Is this common in Rotts? What could be causing this?

Re: Dirty Eyes

One very common cause of eye boogers, as I call them, is a food allergy and a diet that does not agree with the dog. Another cause could be allergies to something in the air....

Given that in another post you said you are feeding Iams, I would switch to a higher quality food and see how your pooches eyes are after a bag of something better.

Re: Dirty Eyes

Blade also gets that all the time. I was feeding him Canidae but I just switched to Orijen. I also noticed his back legs tend to get itchy (he "mouthes" them quite often)... Do you think it could be a food allergy, too? Oh, he has an unusual runny nose as well... I thought it was the season, you know... lots of pollen everywhere, but now that you're bringing up the food allergy, maybe Canidae is to blame. I can't tell yet if it was, because I switched him entirely on Orijen only a day ago, but I'd really like to know if it's common for puppies to develop food allergies!

Re: Dirty Eyes

We're having boogie eyes too but we're on Innova. I've only fed one bag but I'm finally really happy with this kibble except for the lil goobers that haven't gone away yet.

They were non existent with Merrick, and maybe Lex is having seasonal allergies like me, who knows.

I think with the price of Innova I'm going to mix it with Merrick or CA Nat and see how we do.

Re: Dirty Eyes

Tier has eye boogies CONSTANTLY. If I wipe them off, there will be more 10 minutes later. Very frustrating.

Re: Dirty Eyes

I two had this problem with my girl up until she was about 7 mths old. I would be cleaning her eyes every half hour, she is 9 mths now and I very rarely have to do it.

Re: Dirty Eyes

My girly is 8mos but I only wipe her face a few times a day. This may not be much, but like I said we didn't have boogies before the recent Innova.

Finding the right balance takes patience, I keep telling myself.
