IAMS good or bad?

Jolie is 4 months old. I feed IAMS Proactive Puppy Large Breed Formula. I know preparing her food myself would be a better but its not an option. Is IAMS a good food. She seems to be doing well. She weighs 44 pounds as of July 7.

Re: IAMS good or bad?

Read the ingredients on your Iams bag, then look up and read the ingredients on a premium food (Innova, Canidae, Orijen etc...) It's pretty easy to see that Iams is not a quality food and has poor ingredients.
Try the search feature, type in "Iams" and see what you get. There are tons of posts on here regarding foods.

Post Re: IAMS good or bad?

It's a mid-grade quality food, that is expensive. You could be doing so much better for your puppy. Find a food that does not have corn, wheat or meat by-products and uses human grade meats.
Iams is made by Proctor & Gamble...and any ingredients that are not fit for their human products are thrown into their dog foods. Any food sold in grocery stores or Walmart type of stores is of poor quality.

Read some threads on the Nutrition & Grooming forum and you will see the same foods mentioned over and over again....Innova, California Natural, Canidae, Wellness, etc.

Iams is relatively low in calories and meat...lots of grains...and by feeding a food that has more meat...you will have to feed less.

Re: IAMS good or bad?

I just want to add, that Canidae has recently been bought out by another company (Diamond I believe another member said) and changed their formula....so their food is no longer as high quality as it used to be :(

This is false. From what I understand Canidae has just built a brand new facility in California....but with the popularity and demand of their food...they have commissioned another company to add to their output. Many pet food companies do this.

Sad when rumors start and then get changed around.

Re: IAMS good or bad?

The rule of thumb is if you can buy a brand of dog food in a grocery or big box store, its quality is mid-range (at best) and isn’t something you want to feed your dog.

There are so many far better food readily available that there’s no reason to feed an inferior food. Reading thru the postings here in N&G will give you lots of info about the food RDNs like and feed their dogs.
