Pumpkin.....how much?

So since my puppy has had mushy stool for the past few days, i added some canned pumpkin (not the pie mix)........but just plain old canned pumpkin to his food. I only added a few teaspoons.

(1) is that enough?

(2) does the rest go in the fridge for use tomorrow?

I recently (past week) went from canidae ALS to orijen, and did it basically cold turkey, so i'm wondering if that had anything to do with it? Do i get some canidae just to mix for a few days or just let it be on the orijen.

Re: Pumpkin.....how much?

How old is your puppy? It's pretty hard to mess up with pumpkin, but I'd say a tablespoon or two for an older puppy and a couple teaspoons for a very young one.

I buy pumpkin in the larger cans and freeze it in ice cube trays, then keep the frozen cubes in a ziplock bag in the freezer. I give Chili a cube several times a week - she loves the stuff. No need to waste any!

A chopped garlic clove in a batch of chicken and rice is fine to feed your puppy - it's cupsful you'd want to avoid.

I don't know why people get all wigged out by the fact their healthy dog may have mushy stools for a couple of days and feel it's necessary to give the dog all sorts of things to "firm things up."

Why not just let nature take its course?

He's 11 months.....today in fact!

I'm a nervous daddy I guess.....hope u are all around when the first kid comes into my life!

Do u think I should mix any canidae back with his orijen or just let the orijen and him adjust with one another?

I certainly see bigger fish to fry on the forums than someone giving their dog some pumpkin for loose stools - what's the big deal?

Well, no harm, no foul as they say!

If you have some Canidae still, there's no harm mixing the two until you've used it up and it may help with the loose stools. Not all dogs do well "cold turkey" and could use a little help from their friends.

Re: Pumpkin.....how much?

I posted in your previous post about the food switch :)

One thing I did want to mention, be careful adding food to his kibble, just b/c I had an issue with Marley and he wouldnt even eat for me unless it was mixed in there...LOL. It took a while to get him over that...and if it's only mushy poops from the food switch it should go away shortly. :)

What is wrong, exactly, with nature taking its course?

Re: Pumpkin.....how much?

No harm in asking questions or looking for help when your a new puppy mom or dad! I have posted several things and have always gotten a great response from the forum...don't let one comment discourage you from posting questions!

Either way... I did the pumpkin when my pup had loose stools. She is 8 months now but I still add the pumpkin into her food every couple months. I stopped adding it when I noticed her stool firhttp://www.rottweiler.net/forums/nutrition-grooming/79073-pumpkin-how-much.htmlming up just because I didn't want her system to get dependent on it. I don't know if that makes sense but it's what I did. I am currently feeding Canidae to my pup and she likes it. I did for a short time switch her from Canidae to Fromm but she got diarrhea from it bad. I switched her back to Canidae but to the Lamb and Rice formula...she was on Chicken and Rice but I feel the Lamb is not as harsh on her stomach. I also do the tablespoon of yogurt to help with the gas. It works great!

Good Luck!

Re: Pumpkin.....how much?

I'm with comm. Way too many negative nellies will ruin the purpose of this site, which is to share info in a respectful, friendly way ... lest we turn away the folks who are really seeking and needing info to help these great pups. I also did the pumpkin thing, and it worked great. I fed about a tablespoon of pumpkin in the "evening meal" for a couple of days, and it worked like a charm. Now he's pumpkin-free and doing great.

Keep posting and let us all know how it goes!

Re: Pumpkin.....how much?

Mushy stool for a few days after switching kibbles isn't gonna cause any harm to a pup or adult dog. It's pretty normal for a kibble fed dog. Why would you want to add pumpkin or back track and start adding Canidae again? Let the digestive system of your dog do what it's supposed to do. No pumpkin needed.
As a side note...maybe the mushy stool is the dogs digestive system getting rid of all those grains in Canidae that he has no nutritional need for.
