Re: Canidaes Reply

What have they changed about it? I just recommended it to my in-laws who were feeding a food full of by-products and corn. Perhaps I should tell them not to buy it!

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

I still think that for the price, the ingredients are pretty good. a lot of premium foods have some of those grains in them. the thing that bothers me is the "outsourcing" to Diamond. a large company who hasn't got the best reputation.

I just changed to canadae lamb and rice a couple of days before this thread. so far, no one has the runs, and boris does not have his nervous/nausea or any other symptom of distress. I tried him on Evo, he was very upset after just a couple of days. checked the bag and saw turkey. so even the very best foods aren't best for every dog.

I'm really happy though about something. the woman who owned the shop I used to buy my food for is ready to open a new business. her old one failed a few years ago because of an unhappy divorce. she is opening an INDOOR training facility and she will sell the Natura line of food!! yippee!!

Unhappy Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

you know I was gonna put my pup on canidae but decided to just go raw, this really makes my decision easier. Just makes you wonder about all premium kibble if it really has what it says and when will the rest follow.

What do you folks think of Origen? I was in the pet food store reading labels last night. This looked pretty good. No grains.

My sister feeds Orijen to her Akitas. They're doing very well on it.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

Thanks Angel Bunny. My daughter and I spent the evening at "Bill's Wonderland of Pets" reading the backs of all the dog food bags! (I have no life!) Origens did impress me so we purchased it. She has two 11 week old muts and I have a 6 or 7 year old Rotti. I am so disappointed in Canidae!

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

my husband wrote to canidae and they answered him. they flatly denied selling their company to diamond pet foods. some of the text of the message is the same as others have posted in the letters they recieved. I'm still reading between the lines.
his letter:

Message: We have been loyal Canidae customers & are concerned about the recent buy-out of Canidae by Diamond. We would like to be assured that the quality of the product will not be adversely affected by this given the fact that Diamond is not a high end dog food manufacturer. I would like to pose these questions:
Is Canidae continuing to be made at their facility or is it being moved to the Missouri Diamond facility? If it has been moved, will it be made along side Diamond's middle and lower end products?
Will Canidae continue to use human grade meat? Is the recent change in formulation a result of the Diamond buy-out. Is there a specification sheet that
would certify the grade and amount of ingredients?
We would like to continue using Canidae if we can be assured on these issues. Thank You, John McGinn

their reply:
Dear John,

We have not, nor will we be selling, Canidae is still family owned by same 2 gentlemen who created it. All Canidae ingredients are still and will continue to be raised/grown right her in the USA. You can be sure that the quality your have come to love with Canidae will remain.

Please click on the above link, we have updated our site to insure all your questions are answered about our newly improved formulas. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of that page.

Unfortunately in 2005 Diamond did have a recall. The recall was from Aflatoxin, a toxic mold or fungus commonly found in corn. Aflatoxins are more predominately found in certain drought areas or pockets of the US. The unfortunate recall was suspect to a single Diamond employee failing to follow testing protocols in one of their facilities. The single load of corn also was sold under false pretenses and known by the local farmer to contain unacceptable levels of the fungus.
Due to this tragic situation, many manufactures learned a harsh lesson. All of our suppliers must follow strict protocols set forth by us. No single employee can be responsible for the testing of incoming ingredients. All testing and reporting must be confirmed by a second party. In addition all grains are purchased from a single supplier in low aflatoxin risk areas. Even though CANIDAE does not use corn in any of our products, we are proactive in creating testing procedures to help assure the safety of your pets. Also all CANIDAE formulas are tested during our production runs, and cleared by a supervisor, every 30 minutes to assure the safety of our line. We understand the level of trust you must have with the foods you feed your pets, and it's our responsibility and commitment to deliver!

Our quality of raw material as well as quality control has actual increased not decreased. Yes we have diversified our complex carbohydrates as rice continues to climb and high quality availability decreases. Our products are better than ever and more consistent. Yes we have cut costs on shipping rates as fuel continues to go through the roof. To ship pet food from one location is no longer cost effective. Our economy is facing some challenging times and we are being proactive in offering you the highest quality products, yet affordable enough for our consumers to purchase. We are not sure about other companies and their plans for change or their reasons in the past, however we feel we are being open and honest about our changes. We are receiving alot of positive feedback from our customers that are actually feeding their pets our improved formulas, who also refrain from listening to rumors or incorrect information.

We thank thank you for your comments, and hope your pets are able to continue to receive the benefits of our quality products.

Sincerely,
Julie@Team Canidae

I read on a dog food evaluation site that canidae IS made at the diamond plant. I guess they skirted that issue pretty well.

since I just bought a 40# bag, I guess I'll just watch the poop, eyes and coat.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

Wow! Thank you for that bit of information. I'll be contacting them as well. Just when I thought I found food suitable for my Malcolm. Any suggestions on an alternative? Thank you again, because it is time for me to pick up his food.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

my dogs are doing quite well on the canadae lamb and rice. however, my old friend recently re-opened a business, as well as an indoor training and boarding facility. she carries the natura line, so I will be getting healthwise or california natural from her. I'm very excited for her.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

I don't know how closely anyone else is watching the prices, but Canidae just went up a ton! We were at the pet store and the owner showed me the "old bags" and the "new formula bags" she had. I bought a couple of the old bags at the old price. Instead of the 20 lb., they now make a 15 lb. that is about the same price as the old 20 lb. Even the pet store lady was angry about the way they're disguising the price raise by simply making the bags a bit smaller. And I definitely didn't want the new formula. I'll be switching to something else once these are gone.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

I just arrived back from the pet store and purchased Eagle Pack/Holistic Select the Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon variety. It cost me about $45. the same I was paying for Canidae. I fed a cup to Malcolm and he seemed to like it. You know, as I continue to read everyones comments about Canidae lately, maybe that is why Mal had developed allergies??? Drainage from his eyes, sneezing and now an yeast ear infection. Origen is not available here in the Buckeye State.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

I am currently feeding the Lamb and Rice and I noticed the soft stool and more frequent bathroom trips for my girl. It seems like the majority of this thread has switched to the California Natural or the Orijen. How is the bathroom frequency with either of these foods? Right now she is going to the bathroom 6-7 times a day.

Re: Alert for Canidae Users: Formula Changes

Yesterday at training one of the girl with a rottie about 10 months old asked what I was feeding Paradise (I just switched her to Orijen) because she said her girl (Izzy) poops 5-6times a day and it's mushy. She is currently using Canidae and feeds Izzy 4 cups a day. Our trainer also she her dog did not do good on Canidae.

A store that carries the "better brands" just opened about 2 months ago so I told her about it.

Paradise loves her new food and I noticed she has a lot less waste (that's always a good thing)
