Royal Canin

Bonjour
Does anyone use Royal Canin? My adult male rottie adores the Giant croquettes (kibble). The female is on "light management" as she is puts on weight very easily.

I have read the forums but have not seen this brand mentioned.

Re: Royal Canin

Howdy,

You will not see much talk about Royal Canin on these forums because it is a low quality kibble. It is filled with low quality fillers such as corn glutten meal, which has no nutritional value.

Also, it has only 1 meat content in the first 6 ingredients which is NOT good. There is also a fat in the first 3 contents which is also not good.

Search the forums for Innova, Evo, Canidae or Orijen. They are all high-quality human grade products and very recommended here.

cheers

Re: Royal Canin

The reason we use royal canin (well me anyway) is that we can't get the high quality kibble you can in the USA and canin is probably the best of a bad bunch. if I were to have orijen delivered it would cost me about 100 dollars per bag. I'm paying £40 (about 80 dollars) just for a 12kg bag of canin.
My dogs have kibble for breakfast and raw in the evening.

Re: Royal Canin

Ahh, well at least it's not science diet, iiams or pedigree.

$80 is pretty expensive, but imo your already paying ALOT for dog food... and the difference from Canin to Orijen is HUGE!! It's like comparing McDonalds to a Steak house.

I think it would be worth the extra $20 if it's within your budget.

What about Eagle Pack Holistic lines? It seems to be sold internationally, and is not a bad food at all...in fact much better then Royal Canin. Comes in many different protein sources.

Thanks Gina, I've spent a few hours looking for Eagle to no avail, I even asked how much the delivery for Orijen was, they wanted £30 ( about 58 dollars) on top of the cost of the food. When this pack of kibble is gone I'm going completely raw...... even if I have to steam Lotties meat a little :)

First ingredient is "Dehydrated poultry meal?" I had never heard of this, so I looked it up... wish I hadn't.

AAFCO: The clean combination of poultry flesh and skin with or without bone. Does not contain feathers, heads, feet or entrails. If from a particular source it may state so (i.e. chicken, turkey etc).

Note how in this product the source is not defined as "slaughtered poultry".The manufacturer does not disclose the species (or the mix of species) of the poultry used. The fowl can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), turkey, chicken, geese, buzzard, seagulls, misc. roadkill, birds euthanized at shelters and so on.

Re: Royal Canin

Is Nutro available in your areas, specifically Nutro Ultra? That would be a step up from Royal Canin. I can't imagine having to pay so much for kibble...I think that would push me to feed raw as well (provided you can get meat cheaper than kibble! )

Re: Royal Canin

Hi mjfish, Believe me, I 've been living here for 15 months and 12 of them has been looking for decent kibble, (I bought 3 months supply with me)
Yes meat is a is cheaper, I can get 30 chicken wings for about 4 dollars and fresh sardines are about 3 dollars for about 25 6 inch fish........ hence I'm feeding raw:)

I wonder why Orijen and Acana bother to translate the pages to spanish if it is not avaivable there!

We can even get it here!

Just to compare what is expensive I my book:

I pay 29 dkk/$ 6 for 1 kilo Acana Senior..."only" (+ a few crowns more) and only twice as mush as I pay for 1 liter of gas!
But my dog is way more economical than my car! (A 15 kilos bag last more than a month)

Have you been to the Eagle Pack website? I see there is an Eagle Pack distributer for Spain on the site. You may be able to order it from them?

Re: Royal Canin

Hi damp, I think Spain, in general, aren't a very doggy nation, the choice of "premium" kibble in my local pet store (only been open a few weeks) is canin, iams and pedigree, so you can see I don't have much choice, I live about 60 miles from Valencia in a village up a mountain and although my nearest town (about 20 mis drive) is huge there were no pet stores. I can get all my meat from the local butchers so it works out much cheaper.
