Shedding blade?

So I was at the petstore yesterday and couldn't find a Zoom Groom.. :( BUT there were a ton of different sized shedding blades and those contraptions always catch my eye! Probably b/c I have no clue how they work...lol

I'm curious..Marley has a long coat..and has a very soft and super thick coat. Would this be something that would be worth getting of would it end up damaging his coat?

Do these actually cut the hair?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Shedding blade?

Shedding blade like this one : PetEdge: Master Grooming Tools Shedding Blades is more for short haired dogs. It is similar to the kind you use on horses...you just kinda rub it around all directions to get off loose hair. I don't use them at all on any dog...IMO there are much better solutions.

I am surprised petsmart didn't have a zoom groom! That is were I got mine.

Re: Shedding blade?

I went to petco, that was probably my problem. LOL.

I will check out petsmart today. Is the zoom groom the same at a curry comb?

PetEdge: Zoom Groom Natural Rubber Pet Grooming Brush
Here is a link to the zoom groom. PRINT THIS OUT...petsmart will price match ! This is my favorite tool, the design seems to work the best out of all the rubber things I try. People call tools by all different names...when I think of curry comb, I think of a shedding blade (like the last link I posted).

Re: Shedding blade?

You are probably right, that is a real curry comb (I really don't know much about horses). But the zoom groom has longer points, and they are more rubbery than hard. It is made by KONG.

Re: Shedding blade?

Okay. And being that he is a long hairred dog, I think the longer points might be more helpful.

You are awefully knowledgable about all this dog grooming! You should be a dog groomer! LOL

Thanks so much for all of your help. :)

My Cyrus is a long coat and my advice is just give it up You will never win over the hair!

Just kidding of course! But there have been times...anyway I use a furminator, then a rake comb, then a slicker brush, one after the other. I really like the rake type comb the best as it gets into those long strands nicely. I had a shedding blade but it wasn't good on th elong coat.

Keeps him looking good for oh about 5 - 10 minutes!

Re: Shedding blade?

LOL!!!! And Marley's only 8 months old!! I can only IMAGINE what we're in for in a few months! ahahahha!!!

Thank you for chiming in, your boy has such a nice looking coat. Does Cyrus have a top coat or is he all fluffy and soft too? I guess I don't really know if Marley has a top coat or not, I guess I should say he doesn't have a typical top coat. This all confuses me. LOL Either way, it's super thick all over, long on the back of his legs, neck area, and the top of his ears. The rest of it lays flat and is 1/2 -1 inch at best.

I was looking into the Furminator and the knock off Furbuster LOL. But Nishasmom recommended against it being that Marley's coat is so soft. I'm curious how your boy's coat is being that you have such great results with it.

Either way, I am definately picking up the zoom groom.... b/c it will definately help me to get all that soap lathered up! LOL

Thanks for your advice!

He has the typical double coat but his is pretty long all over, very soft and fluffy. The furminator works pretty well, but that rake thing is my favorite.

BTW, I tried bathing him in the tub once and I needed a plumber the next day! He told me "Don't ever bathe that beast in the house again."

Re: Shedding blade?

Okay so I am now completely off topic, LOL....but how can you tell if your dog has a double coat? I know I sound like a complete moron now. LOL. Marley did not come from a good breeder, so I really dont have anyone else to ask these questions to other than you guys.

See and I picked up an undercoat rake yesterday and it didn't seem to do much?! Maybe I got the wrong one...the individual metal "bristles", I guess I would call them, can be spun...it's weird. LOL

That is TOO funny!!!!! I can't believe he actually said that! LOL
