Smile Furbuster vs Furminator

Okay so I was in Walmart when I came across the Furbuster (made by Bamboo). It looks very similiar to the Furminator which I want to buy for Marley.

Thing is, the Furbuster is only $20!!! That's a LOT less that the furminator.. BUT I know sometimes you do get what you pay for....

Also, the furbuster sells replacement heads for it.

For those of you know have experience with either...what do you think??? Think it compares?

Thanks!

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Should work fine...all the Furminator is, is a #40 blade on a stick ...so this should do the trick! The only thing I would worry about would be the handle breaking, or 'teeth' of the blade coming off.

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

It actually can cut the topcoat...if you do to much at one time !! I think it 'grabs' the dead and loose hairs the easiest...therefore that is what comes off first! After all the loose hair is gone it starts on the attached hair! I once had a client who balded his GSD with the furminator...he went a little crazy with the brushing.

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Omg! Poor dog! LOL

That does make sence though...I think I will get the one from Walmart b/c I do like that it has the replacement heads so when the blade gets dull I can replace it for 12 bucks... not buy a whole new unit.

Thanks for your help, I am excited to go and buy our new grooming tool tomorrow :)

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

yup it's just a wide blade and does cut a bit of coat. When hand stripping setter coats a 10 blade is what we used to smooth the back coat after stripping

The furbuster has slightly pointy teeth like a real blade and the furminator has slightly blunted teeth but it's still a bit sharp.

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Are the blades you guys mentioned (#10 and #40) the size of the blade???? I really have no clue about this. LOL. I am guessing the 40 blade would cut more and the 10 would smooth everything? I'm sorry if I sound like a moron here. LOL

Hmm, so I would think that the furminator might end up being more comfortable in terms of not poking him accidently with a sharp edge?

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

#40 is very short (when used to shave on a pair of clippers) it is usually what they use when prepping for surgery (unless they go shorter). A #10 blade is used most often by groomers to shave bellies, faces (poodles ect)...it leaves hair about 1/8 of an inch.

I do not think the #10 blade brushed along a rotties back would catch as much of the loose hairs. The blades are farther apart. Farther apart blades when used to strip (like a furminator) will leave a smoother appearance as they do not take as much hair off.

Anyways, don't worry about poking him...the cheap one will be fine. I usually pull the skin on the back away from the spine to brush (Nisha is kinda skinny)...this way it is not raking against her bones. Brush in short firm strokes; let us know what you think of it .

Sorry if all this confuses you!!

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Thanks for breaking that down for me... I really appreciate it!

I think I actually get the concept now...I don't know why but I have to know how everything works before I buy it. LOL. I know I drive my husband NUTS.

I will definately post my experience with it tomorrow evening!

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Yes let us know Marley's Mama. I wanted to buy one when I went to walmart yesterday, but wasn't sure if it was as good as the furminator! I did find the furminator on costco.com for a lot cheaper than anyone else!

Post Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

Save your money! I would not bother with either. I have not found the Furminator of much use...neither for my own dogs or for the boarding dogs with different types of coats. My Furminator is sitting in a basket collecting dust.

I use a undercoat rake...and find it is the best thing for getting the undercoat out for all breeds....from my Rotties to the Goldens, Labs.,and everything in between.

I'm probably in the minority here....but I don't like it.

Re: Furbuster vs Furminator

What is an undercoat rake?? I have seen one in the store... a wire loop on a handle with zigzag edges?? How does it work? I do know that it is cheaper than both the furminator and the Furbuster.... but I had held off b/c it looked quite scarey to me b/c I have no clue what to do with it! LOL

Thanks for the input guys!

No that's a shedding blade. I have one of those...but don't use it too much.

It's looks kind of like a steel rake. Do a google search for 'undercoat rake'

Yes...it's from the first link...I have the Gripsoft Undercoat Rake with regular teeth. I have found it much better on the coat (it does not cut the top coat) and more gentle.....then the Furminator. Most dogs enjoy the rake.
