Canidae Question

Hello everyone,

I just bought a bag of Canidae ALS and I was wondering for those of you who feed this food how much of it do you feed your rotts. I have a 4 month old 45lb male. The bag is sort of vague, it says to feed 2-4cups.

Re: Canidae Question

I feed my 4 month 42lb pup 3 cups per day. She also gets training treats throughout the day.

Canidae has around 470 calories per cup. So 3 cups should be plenty, if he appears to be boney or to skinny then up his food to 3.5 cups/day.

Although I would NEVER feed my dog purina, they do have an accurate scale of how your dog appearance should be:

I guess that depends on how he looks, is he underweight? Where did he rank on that scale I linked above?

If he appears to be underweight, up the food by 1/4 cup per day.

4 cups is a lot of food for a 4 month old, thats almost 2k calories. Plus, I'm quite certain you give him treats... which will up his calories even more.

What you can do is give him the 3 cups per day and another 1/2 cup for treats. If he starts getting upset stomachs (loose stools) or if he's on the overweight side cut back on his food.

Re: Canidae Question

Is it true that Canidae can cause bloat on large breed dogs? I see alot of guys give this to your rotts and I was thinking about switching him to Canidae until I read the dog review about it.

I've never heard of that.

Personally I think the ALS brand is better then the Chicken/Rice formula because it has more meat content.

Re: Canidae Question

Spawn207- Really different brands react differently with every dog. I know that Canidae is a great brand of dog food and some dogs do great on it.....well my dog DID NOT!! His stools were constantly runny when I was feeding it to him. I had fed him both the ALS and the lamb rice formula...it just didn't agree with Titan. Really you have to try it out and see if it's right for your dog cause what may work for one may not work for another::))

Re: Canidae Question

i have my 9.5 month old on canidae. 4 cups seems like a lot for a pup ur age. i would start with 3 cups, and take it from there.

by the way, I am using the ALS Canidae....4 meat sources, I believe.

Re: Canidae Question

I am no longer a fan of Canidae, a dog nutritionist mentioned the company is unreliable. You need to trust your dog food company.

I "used" to feed Canidae and as far as the association of feeding Canidae and bloating I personally had no problems with my bloat prone Newf's on this food (one of our Newf's has a lot or torsion in her line) . With my Rottie Athena who has bloated - any foods containing turkey made her bloat so Canidae original was bad for her and caused her to bloat so did Innova. She actually bloated more so on Innova dog food. Taking her off kibble was the best thing I ever did for her. I first switched her to NRG salmon dehydrated and Natures Variety & california natural canned she never bloated on that. On home prepared I have to be careful not to include any cruciferous vegetables as these will cause her to bloat right after the meal...she can eat raw turkey but she cannot tolerate turkey in kibble. There are so many factors that can cause a dog to bloat including stress that's why you cannot just conclude that a certain food will cause a dog to bloat.

Being on home prepared I can control what my dogs eat. I have seen a huge improvement in my dogs health since taking them off kibble. If I had to feed kibble I would feed one of the Natura lines of food and I would make it half kibble half canned.

As far as feeding for a 4 month old puppy I would feed the recommended amount and split between 3 meals a day. Judge if the pup is getting to much by the look of the stool, sloppy and the pup may be getting too much.

Re: Canidae Question

I have a 45lb, 5 month old female on Canidae ALS. She gets 1 cup 3 times per day plus approx. 1/2 cup for training. [3-1/2 total] She is nice & lean and has all the energy in the world. That said, I am switching to Orijen Large Breed Puppy as soon as I'm done this 40 lb bag.

Please do not overfeed your puppy. It's so much better for a puppy to grow slow and steady and not be overfed. You may be facing orthopedic problems in the future by overfeeding him.

4 cups of food is way too much for a 4 month old puppy when feeding Canidae. Canidae is a high calorie food...and this is too many calories.

I would feed 3 to 3 1/2 cups in total to your pup. A nice slim pup is so much better. He will reach his genetic weight when he is supposed to.

Just make sure you DONT follow the feeding guidelines and risk over-feeding.

Good luck, hope your pup does great on it!
