Re: Gassy Dog- Which Food to Change To??

I used to feed my Beau Iams (boo, I know), but after getting on here, I decided to start feeding him Canidae. He was gassy on Iams, and I was thinking once I switched, it would get better, I was wrong wrong wrong. I added yogurt and it helped a little bit...

He ended up getting diarrhea from a raw bone I gave him (first one ever) so I put him on a rice and cottage cheese diet for a couple of days, then rice and hamburger to totally clear out his system. When I started feeding him Canidae again, no more gas!!!! YAYAYAYAY!!! Maybe he just needed to clear his system out. What ever happened, I'm glad it did, because my boy could level a room....

I am glad the yogurt seems to be helping!! I have to give credit to this wonderful board for giving me the tip in the first place!

Arrow Re: Gassy Dog- Which Food to Change To??

I moved mine over to Taste of the Wild, which is grain free after my blue heeler wasn't doing very well on Canidae. Now, on a set feeding schedule all 3 of mine are doing great and their coats are nice and shiny and no gas problems at all. although I think the food itself stinks!

Re: Gassy Dog- Which Food to Change To??

Actually since giving him the yogurt, his gas has been less and less each day. In fact today I didn't smell anything (so far)... knocking on my head lol

Is it a good idea to switch foods even if there are no problems? Just to give him a variety? I know you can't switch all the time, and that each time has to be gradual. I just mean because he's been on the Canidae since Sept. I think Canidae is a great food though, right? Gives him everything he needs and much better than supermarket brands, right?

Thanks for everyone's help!

Re: Gassy Dog- Which Food to Change To??

I feed Static Eagle Pack Holistic. At the moment I am rotating between the Chicken, Lamb and Fish bags depending on what 'extras' he has with them .... He does very well on it (although we have never tried Canidae as it isn't available in Australia)
I used to feed him a supermarket cheapo brand when we first got him - he farted and pooped his little heart out, so we switched him to Royal Canin. He did better on that, but he still was slightly gassy and his poos where much better but still not great.
Eagle pack has solved the problem. The only time we have any gas problems is after Static has dug up one of his disgustingly manky bones after a week or so of letting it fester ..... his breath isnt great either on those days!!!

Yes, Canidae is MUCH better then any supermarket brand! It's probably the best premium dog food for the price. The only problem with it (and probably any dog food) is that it's not for every dog. From what I've heard it's great to have a food rotation every 3 months, so long as his stomach can handle it.

I'm actually about to switch my pup off Canidae, her stool is to soft for my liking... when I pick it up in grass it kind of falls apart, like grainy. Was his stool the same way? I know you earlier mentioned anal gland problems, I'm pretty sure my girl has none of those signs.
