hip and joint supplements

I asked my vet about precautionary ways to prevent from developing hip and joint problems in the future. Both her parents are certified but i just want to make sure she stays healthy with no comming problems. My vet suggested to use a supplement other than the amount in the kibble. Will this help or hurt in any way my girl is 6 months old and about 55 pounds shes happy and healthy running and jumping with my other dog and all dogs she meets with no problems? Should i start her on the supplement just as an added helping hand?

Thanks in advance...

Re: hip and joint supplements

My Josh is 16 months and I give him Cosequin DS as a preventative. They come in chewables so they are like treats for him. You can buy them on ebay at a great price.
He is show quality with all the clearances and certifications, etc... both parents are champion show dogs too... but like you I wanted to prevent any future problems.
Good luck!

Re: hip and joint supplements

Many dogs from champion lines with OFA excellent scores can end up with arthritis and mild dysplasia later in life. The best thing you can do for your dog is to take him off kibble and canned foods and feed home prepared with raw meats. Many peices of meat contain natural glucosamines which the dogs body absorbs very well.

For our Newfoundland she is 12 years old now and went through one ARL surgery and a partial tear around 9 years of age. She is OFA excellent and of course a Champion show dog in the States and Canada - all our Newf's are. We started her on a glucosamine supplement when she got her first ARL tear - we give her nutri aid which contains everything I look for in a glucosamine supplement. Since we started her on raw home prepared we were able to discontinue giving her the glucosamine supplement :) She has a lot of mobility in her joints and no arthritis at all. We give her a lot of bones etc with cartlidge on them.

I have used Joint Care from Fosters and Smith. They have different strengthes/combinations depending on the dog's condition.

Re: hip and joint supplements

Oops hit the submit instead of preview, I started my dogs when I noticed a slight stiffness after vigorous exercise. My dogs were at least 5 or 6 y.o.
