What brand dremmel?

I am thinking about getting a dremmel for my boys. My boys are big babies about nail clippings. So I am just going to get a dremmel. What brand did people buy and about how much should I pay.

Re: What brand dremmel?

I just got the cordless minimite 750-02 from Amazon for a reasonable price. Dremel is the brand name. That's the one I got after asking folks here on RDN. I managed to get my rottie girls' nails filed nicely without too much distress. Angus wasn't quite as thrilled with it though. But it seems like it won't be too hard to train him to accept it with treats.

Re: What brand dremmel?

We have a Black & Decker and I think it was about $30 at Home Depot when we bought it last year. It works great, you just have to get them used to the sound so they know that it won't hurt them lol.

Oh I didnt know wal mart had them. I will go and look at them tonight there. The ones at amazon seemed a little pricey. I was a little scared at what I was going to pay. I plan on starting fostering again soon so I am going to hve a dremel before then. Since I will have puppies.

Re: What brand dremmel?

I also have the Dremmel brand, however, they now make them to actually "fit" your hand--kind of curved shaped. I do not recommend this type, as it is very difficult to use at the correct angle.

When using the Dremmel, you should also know that you can not sit there and "grind" on your dogs nail for a long period of time. The Dremmel causes friction and heat on the dogs nail, which in turn, helps retract the quick. However, you can cause pain if held on the nail too long. After you do it for a good amount of time, you will become a Dremmel master

And yes, it will take some time for your dog to get used to it. The biggest thing is the vibration. Take it slow, have patience, and reward.

Re: What brand dremmel?

I didn't start to dremmel till about 2yrs ago (my old girl is 10) I started slow just removing the tips. now I get then really short and they actually seem to prefer it to clipping. i have read that clipping squeezes the quick causing pain. mine lay there and give me their paw for their "manicure" :) I don't just hold it to the nail, I apply small amt of pressure and move it slightly then I press harder and let up again. It does get hot if you press hard and leave it there for any length of time. I like how much shorter you can get the nails over time.

Re: What brand dremmel?

I have actually been doing research on how to you a dremel. I dont want to hurt Kane or Diesel. Diesel and Kane both are rescues from not great situations. So that is making me a little nervous that they will hate it. Kane is older dog around 9 and Diesel is 1.

I did a search on dremels as I remembered that once there was a site that gave excellent info on the "hows" of using a dremel. Here it is for your use. You'll find "how to use a dremel" on the left side of the page.
