Switching to new food

I am going from Euk. to Wellness. Sould I do a slow switch or cold turkey? My Rott does have a senitive stomach. I started tonight 3/4 cup of Euk. and 1/4 of a cup of Wellness. My Rott ate very well, but the one that impressed me was my Rott/Great Dane he can be hard head about eatting, and he smelled the new food and went nuts and finished his food before the Rott. did.

My other question is why do people rotate (feed different kinds) their dog food? I am used to my chinchillas and that is the worse thing that you can do is switch their food.

Thank you,
Dawn

Re: Switching to new food

I've always slowly switched foods when I decide to change what I am feeding, but mainly because I wanted to use up what was left of the old food I know some people just switch "cold turkey" without any problems. There have been times when the store where I purchase my food is out of the kind that I am currently feeding so I will buy a bag of another kind that I had fed and know that my dogs did not have a problem with. But if it is something completely "new" I make the change slowly to see how they do with it.

As far as why people rotate foods, I'm not sure about anyone else but for me it's just so that I am offering a variety. I know I wouldn't want to eat the same thing day after day for the rest of my life

Re: Switching to new food

I switch cold turkey.

We've been active in Rottie rescue and have fostered adult males for about 10 years. I have no idea what most of those dogs ate in the shelter or were fed by their owners and I don't care. We feed Canidae or CA Nat, so that's what the fosters are fed from the get-go. I've never had a problem.

When I fed kibble, I rotated food to vary the amino acids my dogs were getting.
