| I have noticed that my 12 weeks pup had some blood on his stool and has become very loose. I think that since I am putting can food with his dry food that could be giving him the loose stool. I am however trying not to put much in it to see if it continues. I will be calling the vet tomorrow about his condition. I started feeding him boiled chicken with rice to see if that will help with his diahera. As for the blood in his stool, he ate a lollipop stick and it came out the other end and maybe caused him to bleed. I will continue to check his stool to see if it gets worse. Any suggestions. | Re: Bloody loose stool In my book diarrhea + blood = vet NOW. Especially with a puppy ; better safe than sorry! How is he acting? Is he sleeping a lot, eating, drinking?

| Sometimes when they have diarrhea they do get blood in the stools. Is your pup feeling good, playful, happy, etc. Is he drinking? Young puppies can get dehydrated quickly when they have the runs. With a puppy it's best to with hold food for 12 hours...and just give water. It gives their tummy a chance to heal. Then start with some overcooked white rice and a small amount of skinless, boneless, cooked chicken. If there is not reaction to this 3-4 hours later ,give another meal of rice and chicken, and later again if everything is good. The next day start adding a tiny bit of kibble to the rice, chicken mixture and see how things go. If puppy is feeling unwell or you are worried, take him in to see the vet. I would also take in a stool sample...sometimes with giardia or coccidia they have bloody, loose stools. Sometimes overdoing it with the canned food can cause diarrhea. If you plan to use the canned food again, just add a teaspoon mixed into the kibble...and see how things go. Gina

| Re: Bloody loose stool Agreed. Many things can cause bloody stool - and with a puppy this young, it is far better safe than sorry. I would get the pup to the vet. Take a stool sample with you.

| Re: Bloody loose stool He is pretty much acting like himself. He is very playful and energetic. He did just finished his medication on Coccidia. He has been drinking also. When my husband took him out earlier, he said he pooped but no blood, just loose. I have started him on rice and cooked chicken to see if that will help. I'm waiting for him to go and see how it comes out. He gulps his food so fast like he's starving to death when he's fed and then he's looking for more. |

| Re: Bloody loose stool Any vomiting? Off of food? Lethargic? He may just have a upset stomach from eating things he shouldn't but please take him to a vet ASAP to rule out any diseases he could have (maybe still coccidae or worse parvo or other GI viruses) |

| Re: Bloody loose stool No vomiting. His poop was normal today and no blood. He has an appt. on Friday. I pretty much keep tabs on him when he's outside that he doesn't eat anything, so far he's doing pretty good with that. |

| Re: Bloody loose stool Do rotties normally gulp their food without chewing? I try to slow down his feeding by giving him small amounts at a time, but he devours it. What's up with that? |

| Re: Bloody loose stool That is very normal. It's the sign of a healthy appetite. ![]() I think there was a recent thread about just that question.

| Hi I also agree with the vet, but our Rotti pup had that a few years back and it was colitis (not sure of the spelling)...She would also try and go and sometimes just a tinge would come out. We took her to the vet and thats what it was. They gave her pills and within a few days all was better.......Not sure of the medicine that was used, I keep all the bottles and I will ck it out. Hope all is well and you'll be in my thoughts Cheryl |
