Re: eatin grass gettin sick MY dobes have always done this at least once a day, although they only ever bought the grass back up, never food, I thought it was a dobe thing because my rottie has never eaten grass. I tried to stop them eating the grass but as soon as my back was turned they'd be eating it again. Abbie

Re: eatin grass gettin sick I've never really had a problem with any of my dogs eating grass. A few times they had, but not on a regular basis or often enough for me to be concerned. Someone told me once that dogs eat grass when they have an upset stomach....can't remember who it was that told me that or how true that might be, but maybe it's not the grass that is making him sick and he's eating it because his stomach is upset?

Re: eatin grass gettin sick Sometimes dogs eat grass on porpose in order to throw up because of an upset stomage or just as a natural form to get rid of parasites or many times because it helps them for their bowl movements. If they throw up more than once or twice a week its best to take them to a vet and have them checked out. An upset stomage can mean so many things, that its hard to figure out by yourself whats causing this. My dogs eat grass all the time before "potty" and sometimes throw up, but as this is not constant my vet told me not to worry, it seems as they know what they are doing as weird as this looks to us.

Re: eatin grass gettin sick I asked my vet about that also, and he said that dogs eat grass because they like the taste. Mine eat grass all the time...sometimes they throw up the grass, but I normally don't let them eat that much. We just make sure we keep the grass in the backyard cut. They normally eat the grass when it is a little longer. Just make sure you don't have any fertilziers on your grass...that would be awful for your dogs to ingest!

Re: eatin grass gettin sick ok well that makes me feel better. we have some what trained him that if hes going to throw up to do it in our bathroom, or a hard surface not carpeted area. my female will eat grass all the time but doesnt get sick. its weird how he does but she doesnt. it might also have to do with the fact that she isnt a pure bred.

Re: eatin grass gettin sick Eating Grass Holly Nash, DVM, MS Veterinary Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc. Q. Why do dogs eat grass? A. Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet. Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach. The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner. In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

Re: eatin grass gettin sick All of my Rotts over the years have eaten grass at some point. Some have eaten more than others. However, only 1 would throw up almost everytime after eating grass. It would always happen within 10 minutes of eating the grass. I asked my vet and she that can be a common reaction and that it was nothing to be overly concerned about.

| Re: eatin grass gettin sick Nisha loves grass; especially the long "soft?" pieces. She always goes to the fence-line were we haven't weed-eated yet to chomp on them .
