Wink Rotti eating Purina dog chow?

Hi,
My Rottweiler is now on "Purina dog chow"
It was not our choice, he had been eating that food before we got him and did not want to change emediatly. I have now herd that Purina is not at all good dog food. The main ingredient is corn. What kind of dog food would you recomend?? Anything work great for your rotti? Mine has quite a dry coat and an EXTREAMLY sensitive stomach. Thanks!!

Re: Rotti eating Purnia dog chow?

Reading thru the postings here in Nutrition and Grooming will show you which foods we like and why.

Over the years my knowledge and education in the area of canine nutrition has grown. In 1984 I fed SD. In the 1990s I fed various premium kibble. Now I feed raw following the raw prey model.

What worked the best for me?

So far the raw prey model.

It's worked the best because the three dogs I'm feeding it to--2 personal bitches and a foster--are thriving and look spectacular--better now than when they ate premium kibble.

I feed my dogs raw also (except my youngest gets premium kibble--Nature's Variety) for one meal in the morning. I would also highly recommend raw.

We fed Marley raw and she did very well and now feed Buddy raw. He is doing very well and loves it. My only suggestion if your thinking of feeding raw is do your homework. Read, Read and Read some more.

Some dry foods commonly recommended are California Natural, Innova (or EVO), Canidae, Orjein, and Wellness.

I have fed EVO and Wellness, my dog did well on both.

Purina is a poor quality food, and it may explain why you are having health problems with your dog. Ear infections, red runny eyes, are often caused by a reaction to eating a food heavy in corn and grains. Dogs need meat to thrive.
Look for a food with no corn, wheat or soy and that does not contain by-products.

In Canada two of the best foods are Orijen and Go Natural. Some great American made foods that are sold in Canada are Innova, Canidae, Wellness, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, California Natural, etc.

Honestly, almost any food will be an improvement over Purina, and you will have to feed far less of a good quality food.

Re: Rotti eating Purina dog chow?

I once believed in Purina.......... About 7 years ago, I went to Innova, boy what a difference. Purnia is not the food the company claims it is. Go for anything that Brunie's mom mentioned and you will be pleased with the difference.

Ok Thank you very much everyone. I am going to research on the raw food diet. Where can you buy it? Either that or canidae or Innova. Thanks

You can get Orijen at this store in Delta. Orijen is a grain free food, and may be a better choice for your dog because you said it has a sensitive stomach. Usually if the store sells Orijen, it will also sell Canidae as well as Innova...and maybe even raw.

The store in Delta is:

Re: Rotti eating Purina dog chow?

You can buy the ingredients for the raw diet at the grocery store when you do your shopping and you probably buy most of what you need already. We feed Buddy this :

Morning Meal
1/4 - 1/2 pound meat mixture*
*Our butcher grinds up Beef or Elk muscle,
(heart, tongue), organ (liver, small amt. of kidney) and tripe.
4 oz. Fish (Canned Mackeral)
1 Egg (Raw with shell)
1 TBSP Veggie Glop*
*Spinach, Broccoli, Carrots, Sweet Potato & Apple daily,
plus whatever else is in season ie. berries, squash...
1 TBSP Yogurt
1 TBSP Soaked Oats
1 tsp Oil (Rotated between Wild Salmon Oil & Hemp oil)
1 tsp Raw Honey
1 tsp Kelp
1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
500mg Vitamin C (Ester C powdered)

Evening Meal
1-3 Large Chicken Backs (Raw)
or 1/4-1/2 pound Ground Chicken (includes bones)

Recreational Bones
Beef Femur Bones (Raw) - daily for growing pups,
two to three times weekly for adults

Hope this helps

We mix up enough of the "morning meal" to last a week we do this on the weekends. We buy about a weeks supply of chicken backs. I like to cut the backs down each side of the spine to make 3 pieces because Buddy likes to try to swallow after 1 or 2 chews and it looks a bit hard going down.. We divide everything up into 1 meal sizes and put in freezer bags and freeze then thaw over night in fridge as needed.

I buy raw from Oma's Pride.

I also get freezer burned meat from friends (no processed), meat from hunter friends, and meat, bones, and organs from people who slaughter animals for their tables.

Bravo is another supplier of raw food.

Having a freezer is a big help and having an extra fridge is nice. My DH is a meat eater, but he's drawn the line at having the dogs' food thawing in our kitchen fridge.

Kev, just curious... About how much does it cost a week to feed your guy? I'm interested in feeding raw, but always thought it was too expensive...
