Burp and Barf

Our 9 month old puppy has a problem: He burps and barfs. He drinks water too fast and too much and has a delay burp. However when he burps, it comes up with water and food. We attempt to regulate his water consumption, but sometimes we miss (plus he's stubborn and doesn't like to listen first time told). He has done this at least once every other day for the past 3 months. We have carpeted floors and I am constantly cleaning after his burps. Any advice how to either control his consumption further or wisdom as to what is? [He eats Canadae, but has done this with his puppy food also.]

Have you tried to elevate his water/food bowls to help prevent air inhalation while drinking? How are his bowel movements? Is it possible he has a blockage? My rottie also loves his water. Not sure if Taser is OCD with water. Will not stop until we remind him to "take a break."

Have you asked your vet about thyroid or diabetes testing? These factors could be a trigger for his thirst.

Do you put water on his food sometimes that helps as he will get some of his water intake on his food.

Re: Burp and Barf

and some Rottweilers just randomly burp up food or water for no medical reason.

I've had several of these in the 23 years I've had the breed. Most don't do it but a percentage of them do and no vet I know of has ever found a reason. It's particularly gross when you have a poop eater :(

Re: Burp and Barf

well i guess its time for me to fabricate a table for the pup. how tall should i make it. and by any chance do u think it is possible that the fact that hes from a back yard breeder? im kinda thinking that that little fact might be the reason im not sure i havent talked to our vet yet bc it isnt all the time its just some of the time. im going to try the elevation thing first. if you dont mind give me an idea of how tall i should make it. as of right now i put his food in his crate with him in the mornings and evenings. its just going to take some time for me to get both of my dogs to get accustomed to the table deal.

If he is doing this as frequently as you describe, a visit to the veterinarian might be in order to check his esophogus. Megaesophogus comes to mind, although not as common in rottweilers as in some other breeds, it can happen. It would be good to rule this out.

would megasophogus also cause him to snort alot like when he is laying on his back or laying down in general. i just want him to be happy. i believe i will take him to the vet but i still want to kno how tall i should make the tables for the food an water. that way i can knock all the birds out with one stones throw. i know i can buy something for the food but i have the accessibilty to make one the way i want for them.

If your dog is eating/drinking fast enough to make him burp and puke, I would definitely NOT RAISE THE FOOD/WATER. These two things together is a recipe for BLOAT, which is much more serious than cleaning up a little off the floor.

My girl is a fast eater/drinker and I find that if I make her come and sit for a nice barrel rub she will burp in a much more controlled way.

Re: Burp and Barf

I agree with the poster who advised not raise the food and water bowls. Raised bowls are a contributor to bloat. Another contributor is water before and after eating. Try not allowing your pup to have water 1 hour before and 1 hour after meals. And of course, limit the amount of active play after eating.

Re: Burp and Barf

yes that's exactly what I was talking about. I spent plenty of money at the vets the first dog I had that did that and they just said that Rotts sometimes have weak stomach valves and burp up stuff sometimes. I've had several do this over the years and it's never been any big deal. You can have it checked out if it would make you more comfortable

I don't know how reliable this link is, but here is some information regarding elevating dog dishes.

Re: Burp and Barf

Sorry I have been wishy-washy with this thread. I had been wanting an elevated dog food station for my dog for a different reason altogether and I have been reading various places on the internet. I now found a new site that supports earlier members view on NOT ELEVATING the dog's dishes. It seems to have its pros and cons. Here is a link regarding bloating and a contributing factor is elevated stations.

Bloat in Dogs

All the best to you and your puppy in finding what helps him.

Re: Burp and Barf

I have an 18 month old male and if I'm not careful to keep him from drinking too much too fast he'll do that. He hardly even misses a step, just ..urp/splat and keep walking. My rots eat in their crate, I leave them there for to let their food settle for 20 minutes and then let them out for a drink, but not too much.
