Just wanted to say thanks!

I really just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave advice on food to feed my girl. my vet had told us that Iams and Science Diet was the best choice, so i paid a lot of money thinking i was doing to right thing for my puppy. After reading through the threads on here, i discovered that was not at all the case! I then did my own research, and Sasha has been on Canidae ALS now for about 2 weeks, and i see a HUGE improvement! her behavior is even better! shes only pooping once a day, compared to SIX times on Iams...shes not itching as bad, and her coat couldnt look better! and i'm actually paying less for the Canidae, because shes eating less! i was paying $27 for a 20lbs bag of Iams, and she was eating 4 cups a day! now, i pay $35 for a 40lbs bag, and shes only eating 2 cups! So, thank you everyone! I now know i'm doing the right thing for my little girl, and its great! :o)

Re: Just wanted to say thanks!

OK, hoping someone who raised puppies can chime in for I'm not sure the advise I'm about to give would be correct. I'm wondering if feeding your 4 month old pup only 2 cups a day is enough. My senior boy gets 2 cups a day and he's in great shape. But I would think a puppy would need more. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

By the way, glad you switched to a better food. That I can say with confidence.

Re: Just wanted to say thanks!

I usually feed according to what the puppy or dog looks and feels like. You should be able to feel the ribs with out much effort but you should not be able to see them. It depends on the activity level of the puppy to decide how much food he/she needs. I have very active rotties who eat between 3-5 cups of food a day split into two meals. One is two years old the other is six years old. When they were puppies they ate at times six cups of food a day and I was feeding Innova or Eagle Pack now I feed exclusively Eagle Pack.

Re: Just wanted to say thanks!

She is 4 months old, but she is only 27lbs....she was the runt :o) I have given her up to 3 cups a day, and she never finishes it. she gets 1 cup in the morning, and 1 cup and night, and she never acts like she wants more. she looks great, and the vet says shes healthy. I think 2 cups is sufficent for now, but i dont expect it to be that way forever. i assume she will let us know when she needs more! however, if she should be eating more than that, please let me know. this is our first time owning a rottie. we have had chows and shepeard mixes in the past, so this is all new to us! i just want to make sure i'm doing right by our pup!

She does sound a bit of the light side? Try giving her 1/4 cup more per meal..so that she is eating 2 1/2 cups in total per day.

Canidae is almost 500 calories per cup..so it is filling. If she is growing and gaining weight...and looks good, I would not worry.
