course hair after shaving

Oskar had surgery in August and they shaved a big square on his back above his tail for the morphine epidural, he also came home with a pain patch there. Now the hair that has grown back is very dry and course and looks 'dull'. He has a beautiful shiny black coat everywhere else. He is starting to shed like crazy and when I was brushing him yesterday the dandruff in that area was pretty bad, big thick flakes.
Has anyone else experienced this after shaving? I would love to know if his beautiful smooth coat will come back. I feed him good quality food, Holistic Blend Lamb and Rice and he gets Nupro supplements which are supposed to support healthy skin and coat.

Re: course hair after shaving

Once those hairs shed out and are replaced with fully new hairs it should be back to normal. The problem is that the hair was cut off at skin level when he was shaved, so you have hairs which don't have the normal closed, pointed tips, but hairs which have had their ends sliced off.

Re: course hair after shaving

Sometimes when shaved too close the actual hair follicle can be damaged. If this was the case chances are the hair might never be "normal".

I have seen cases where the actual hair changes colors in the "shaved" areas .

Fish oil caps are really good help with things like this. Annie had a big lipoma on her side, and the hair was VERY slow to grow back. I had slacked off on the EFA-Caps before that; when I put her back on them again, the hair was back and normal in no time!

Re: course hair after shaving

It does take a while to grow back but what you are describing is normal from my experience. My dog had his entire belly, one leg, and half his side shaved. The coat that started to grow back was really ruff and I also noticed a lot of skin flakes (never a problem before). After it was fully grown it looked fine.

Re: course hair after shaving

Both my girls had spay shavings. Last girl had almost entire belly shaved and Lola had about half. Their bellies were like leather and they got many belly kisses. When full fur returned it was back to original coat. I hope back hair works the same way.
