What to Feed Pup

What brand food is good for rottweilers? My friends fed their puppies Pedigree Puppy and it seemed to do them well.. Do I need to upgrade to a Science Diet type quality food for my 8 week year old?

Pedigree and Science Diet are both poor quality foods. These foods are grain based and what little meat is in them, is inferior in quality.

Please read the threads in Nutrition & Grooming...the most often recommended foods here are Canidae (best priced out of all of the super premium foods), Innova, Wellness, California Natural, Natural Balance, EVO, Orijen, etc.

Google the names..and it will take you to their websites with store locators.
You may pay a bit more...but will need to feed far less food, as well as clean up less poop.

I feed Eagle Pack. It's a good food and what she was raised on. When she finishes growing, we'll switch to home made which is what we feed our adult dogs.

Please spend some time reading thru the postings here in Nutrition and Grooming.

Euk is not considered a good food for reasons you'll quickly learn.

I will probably go with canidae all life stages brand I've read good reviews.. How long will a 40lb bag last on average for puppies? I read after about 50 lbs its 3-4 cups daily , after 6 mo. Should it be 2 meals 1.5-2 cups each meal? Thanks

A 40lb bag for me lasted a month, give or take it seemed (probably a little longer than a month). I really liked the Canidae because it is one of the only premium dog foods that comes in a 40lb bag!

From 8 weeks to 17 weeks I fed my pup 3 meals a day, each meal was about 1.5 cups. Total of about 4.5 cups a day. Sometimes he would eat all of it, sometimes not. As a pup he got to choose how much he wanted/needed. Once he was older and not as interested in his middle daytime meal I switched him to twice a day and now he only gets about 3 cups a day.

I use Eagle Pack Holistic for Jett and she loves it! She is also fed raw food, sardines, yoghurt, cottage cheese, chicken necks etc.

Re: What to Feed Pup

What to feed is interesting. I always think if the teeth are good the coat is shiny and the dog has energy and is not overweight and the poos are firm and not copious then the diet is okay.

My first dog - and I had no experience with dog food, well she spent her whole life on pedigree kibble and canned food because I thought it was good food. She lived till nearly 18, full of energy and a shiny coat and cost me less in vet bills than any dog I have had since. Second dog was similar.

These days I feed quite a lot of raw but I also feed some Advance we win at agility trials, Supercoat (Australian supermarket brand of kibble) and one dog has actually done really well on Eukanuba and it was the only brand of kibble that didnt give her an upset stomach.

People at my dog club who have performance and show dogs have a range of different experiences with different brands of dog food and diets with thier dogs. Often quite conflicting, but their dogs all look great.

I like to grow my current pups slow and combine supercoat, advance or Eukanuba puppy with raw. I havnt seen Eagle pack holistic over here in Western Australia. It sounds interesting. Not really much of a choice over here.

Re: What to Feed Pup

Just a quick question, I switched my 7 year old rottie to Solid Gold's Adult Maintenance / Senior dog food from Iams (I know AWFUL FOOD) and she has been thriving.

Our 11 week old puppy was being fed Inova and we've been transitioning him to Solid Gold's Hundchen Flocken Puppy (lamb) and his coat looks great and has been doing well.

I was told that it is a great holistic dog food, but haven't seen it mentioned on the forums, should I switch them to Inova? I want the best quality food possible for my kids, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
