ideas for some wieght loss

Hi im wondering what would be a good and healthy way to help my rottie lose a few pounds she is'nt excessivly overwieght but could do with a few pounds but dont want to under feed her she was on dry foods before when her previous owners had her but i feed her canned dog meat and dry mix together but im not entirely sure how much i should be feeding her i normally give her around a cup of dry mix and just over the same amount in dog meat and mix it together before i started feeding her canned dog meat she picked at her food and now she has a combination she usually eats most of it in one go so am i feeding her too much and would it be more beneficial to feed her twice a day rather than once ?

the cans of dog meat i buy are relevantly cheap in the uk Chunky with beef and gravy 1200g this does her around 3 feeds and was feeding with Bakers Complete Dog Food Rabbit & Duck 1.5kg but only recently started mixing her dry with canned meat when she was only eating dry dog food she got 4 meals from the dry mix but will be changing her dry dog food as there is a slight chance she has an allergy to this

so should i cut down on what im feeding her should i feed her more also i have been told that canned dog meat is bad for there teeth is this true or has someone just miss informed me

thanks

Re: ideas for some wieght loss

do a search in the nutrition forum and you'll find lots of information there. How old is your dog? How much does she weigh? They should eat twice per day, unless they are young puppies (less than 5-6 months), then they should eat 3 times per day. How many calories is she eating per day? How active is she?

Throwing a period in once and awhile would make your post a LOT easier to read. Adjusting the dog's weight is very simple. Just start off with having her "move a little more, and eat a little less". Try and feed a good food. A little more exercise, and a little less food...that's the key.

Re: ideas for some wieght loss

Up the exercise but also switch foods to a super premium. Do some reading on this forum, but commonly recommended brands are Canidae, Innova, Wellness, Nature's Variety, Timberwolf Organics, EaglePack Holistic (only the Holistic line), etc. The food you are feeding appears to be low-grade food which is typically high in carbs, so just feeding less may not really have a big impact on weight loss.

Thanks for the replies i have been away for the past coupel of days so could'nt reply

im not sure what wieght she is exactly i should find out in the next few days i will be able to post it then

ive changed her food to pets at home complete with gravy not sure if anyone on the forum has heard of this but apparently in the uk a there is a lot of large dog owners buy this for there dogs and she seems to be eating this fine i just add a few drops of water to the food and instead of feeding her once a day i feed her half of her normal meal twice a day

she is'nt really an active dog she does like to go walks but does'nt do much else around the house except sleep i try take her out as often as possible usually for an hour at a time and around 5 times a day but over the past few days the weather has been bad and i cannot let her off her leash as it's possible she may run off

Get her on a high quality food, the food you mention I have never heard of. Do a search in the nutrition forum to find a good food that uses human grade meats. You will be able to feed less food because the higher quality food will have more calories per cup than regular store bought food.

Also, she should NEVER be let off leash if there is a chance she'll run off. You need to make sure her recall is 100% before even THINKING about letting her off leash. Continue to take her on leashed walks and also do games that will stimulate her mind.

Re: ideas for some wieght loss

You need to measure the food with the same measure every day and/or weigh it, so that you know exactly how much you're feeding, too many people just eyeball the amount of food they feed and you can be overfeeding by a large amount if you do this (also, do not go by the amounts on the food bag, these are almost always WAY too much). Generally, if you cut the food back by 25-30% and increase the exercise (regular walking on a leash, which is good for you, too), you will see weight loss fairly quickly. You should also weigh the dog on the same scale at least every week or two to make sure she's actually losing weight, if not, you need to cut back the food even more.
