Safe to go grain free?

Brutus is a year old now and I am considering changing to a grainless food. I know the protein content is much higher and am curious if it's safe to switch at a year old. Currently he is eating Innova. He has some dry skin now but I'm thinking it's more due to the cold weather/dry heat than food related. What do you guys think and what grainless foods would you suggest?

Re: Safe to go grain free?

Even puppies can eat grain-free foods, as long as they are owned by someone who will notice if they are being overfed. I am currently feeding Taste of the Wild, which comes in three different proteins (buffalo, turkey and duck and salmon), I feed this because it's one of the few all life stages grain free foods and I have puppy in the house. I have also fed both regular flavors of Evo, Instinct by Nature's Variety, the grain-free version of Go! Natural, and my sister is feeding Orijen and her dogs are doing very well on it.

Re: Safe to go grain free?

Hello

My girl Bessy is now 1 years old as well. But I am putting off feeding her a high protein food till she is at least 1 1/2 years old.

Please read through some older posts, and you will see the reason why feeding high protein is best to wait till most of their growing has finished. Something about the protein to calcium ratio... but do check the older posts for more accurate advice regarding this!

Re: Safe to go grain free?

bessy-senior, actually the concern is the calcium to phosphorus ratio.

I just ordered a bag of Orijen, we'll see how it goes. Thanks

Hello you're absolutely right... sorry, old age

I have posted a question about Orijen before:

And here's the previous post about feeding a pup Evo or other grain free formulas:
