Talking Curoius about Feeding schedule!!

Hello everyone!! I have a few questions and would like to get some insight about how i should be feeding my PUP!! ("CHANCHO" 13 week/M) Currently he is on Science Diet Large Breed Dry Food..He Likes it but doesnt devoure it like he did when i gave him some chicken breast during a little upset stomach issue he had a few weeks ago!! I feed him in the morning at about 8:00-9:00 am after his morning walk! and again at 4:00-5:00 pm for dinner. about 1 1/2 cups each time.. with treats in between meals for training and playing time! He looks a little thin but the Vet say's that he is fine and very healthy! I am new to this and would like to know if this is a good schedule or am i underfeeding him and is the food i am giving him the best out there! I see and hear a lot of people feeding their dogs CANIDAE..
any insight would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you all for your suggestions in advance!!

Re: Curoius about Feeding schedule!!

Science Diet is a poor quality food. I would research and find a better food. Shelby is on Innova and there are other favorites as well if you do a search. Also, as puppies, I would feed 3 times a day rather than 2. Make sure the weight gain is slow and steady so you don't damage their joints.

Post Re: Curoius about Feeding schedule!!

Science Diet is an overpriced, poor quality food containing corn, and by-products and very little meat.
Read some of the other threads and you will see the same food suggestions coming up over and over again.

Your pup should be eating 3 times a day till about 5 months of age...then you will notice less interest in the lunch time meal and can phase it down to 2 times per day.
Measure out the food and put the bowl down...give your pup 15 minutes to eat...and then take the bowl away. You may want to add a spoonfull of canned dog food, or teaspoon of yogurt or even a bit of warm water to the kibble.

Re: Curoius about Feeding schedule!!

So glad you are getting your pup off the Science Diet, it is as everyone has said not a good choice. When you change your pups diet remember to do it gradually to minimize tummy problems. Also the premium foods like Canidae (which my boy does great on) are much higher in calories so you will be feeding your pup less food. Good luck and enjoy this wonderful puppie time...it goes by so quickly!

Good for you that you changed food. As others have noted, SD is really a miserable food.

Keep an eye on Chanco's weight on his new food. You can often feed less of premium foods and the last thing you want is a porky pup.

As far as canned foods, there's no need to feed canned food.
