Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

I know that many of you have been worried about the food recalls and want to cook and prepare your own food for your dogs.

I have used this recipe for my own dogs and they just love it and thrive on it. The only thing is, sometimes to find the time to shop and cook.

This is from Monica Segals booklet of home cooked recipes.

This is enough to feed a 100 lbs dog for a week.
For a Healthy, Moderately Active Dog.
It provides 41% protein and 38% fat.

28oz lamb, ground, cooked
30 oz stewing beef,cooked
26 oz beef heart, cooked
3 and 1/2oz beef liver, cooked
16 oz mackerel, canned
12 eggs,cooked
4 and 1/2 oz oysters,canned
42 oz pasta, cooked
16 oz winter squash,cooked
16 oz sweet potato,cooked
8 oz spinach, cooked
7 capsules Multi-Vitamin without copper and iron
7 capsules cod liver oil
7 capsules vitamin E (200 IU)
24 tsp bone meal
1 -1/4 tsp kelp
1500 mg magnesium citrate
3 tsp No-Salt

It makes alot...so I divide enough into containers for 2 meals per day...for the first couple of days and freeze the rest and pull out when I need.
Some days I feed kibble, some days they will have chicken necks as a meal, etc.

Gina

Re: Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

Gina,
This is great that you posted this. I have the time to do this and at this point I it is a neccesity. I have one 112#,130#,and a 90# rotty. Two of which are 10 months & 11 months. They all are on diets for kidney problems. The vet said they could only handle 15% protein @ this time. How in the world can I tell if they are getting too much? He said between 8-12 ounces of meat mixed with veg. and fruits. It just looks like so little and they are aways going to their dish now for more. Wendy

With a kitchen scale and faithful use of the USDA Nutrient Database ( http://www.nal.usda.gov/ - they are offline until 6pm tonight, but don't let that stop you after that! ), it takes very little time or effort to know the composition of the fresh foods you are feeding your dog. I created a simple Xcel spreadsheet for my Luna (PLE) and I knew exactly what she was getting in protein, fat, carbohydrate and the complete nutrient composition - which I compared with the National Research Council's tables on nutrient requirements for dogs to ensure her diet was as balanced as possible.

Another great resource for home-prepared cooked meals, including diets for dogs with medical conditions affected by diet such as kidney disease, is "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets, The Healthful Alternative" by Dr. Donald Strombeck, DVM PhD. There's a great education to be had inside that book along with recipes for appropriate diets. The great thing about this book is that if you take the time to READ and comprehend it, you understand WHY to feed this and not that, etc.

Re: Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

Thank You! I am going to buy that book and a couple of others that caught my eye first thing. Until then I want to make sure they are getting what they need without making their blood levels get any worse. They go back to the Vet Monday at 11. Rice,Turkey, carrots, egg, squash for tonight. I made a beef stew for them this morning but Dominick wasnt as crazy over that as the turkey. I will check out the web site tonight to...Wendy

For your dogs with kidney problems it's a bit different.
You need to get calories into them without all of the protein...and I think moondog has given you good advice...order Dr. Strombeck's book and follow the kidney recipes.
I would think (this is me guessing?) that you would have to up their fat intake and their carbs...so that you can get more calories into them. Good carbs are potatoes, and oatmeal...you can make a huge amount at one time for all of the dogs.

Also getting the calcium/phosphorus and all of the minerals and vitamins balanced are very important. You have two young dogs,,,that still have not finished with all of their bone and joint growth.

They can eat an unbalanced diet for 2-3 weeks...but after that their body is robbed of important things.

I do admire you for taking on the chore of cooking for your dogs...it really is one of the best ways to feed them....if it is balanced and done properly.

Re: Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

thanks Gina!
Cant wait to get my hands on that book by Dr Strombeck. I finally have a smile on my face. My dogs just ate and now they not asking to go out and eat grass to throw up! Im sure it wasnt as balanced as it should be but it is something...Its more than they have kept down in weeks! Im going to call all the book stores and see if I can locate the book! Would the oatmeal be better than the rice considering their upset stomachs? Thanks everyone for being there for me! There is finally a light at the end of the tunnel now...Wendy

flipon - In the past decade the thinking on low vs high protein diets has changed dramatically.
Read these articles in their entirety, and then consult with your vet. Knowledge is power!

Re: Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

Wow am I ever learning..Thanks to all of you. I just went shopping and bought:10 pounds lamb,100 pounds hamburger,5 family packs turkey drumsticks, 1 case chicken leg quarters, real unsalted butter, fish body oil(salmon)tablets, Fresh salmon skins on,10 dozen eggs, whole heavy cream, canned mackeral( but use sparingly due to high phosphorus), 2 boxes farina, 2 boxes cream rice, bunch of fresh sweet potatoes,5 butternut squash,3 acorn squash, fresh spinach, fresh green beans,2 green peppers,1 cantaloupe, bag of pears, couldnt find cranberries,10 bags of frozen peas and carrots,6 gallons distilled water, bottle of 400mg vit E,Bottle of b-complex,and bottle of Co-Q10, I am giving ground egg shells for the calcium 1/2 teaspoon per pound of food! How am I doing so far? Now I have to put it together in the right portions and hope their Creatinine & Bun levels go down. I have concern about their coats...Use to be shiney and smooth just beautiful before they got sick. Now they are dull with a oilly feel and have noticed some dander which wasnt present before. Will the stuff I bought help this and about how long before I notice a change? I am going to buy some green tripe somewhere!I also have started cooking their egg whites and using only 1 yolk raw in one of their meals. They eat three times aday now instead of twiceI will cook all their veg. still alot to learn...Wendy

Looking for previous web site posted here!

A person here helped me find a web site from the FDA regarding required amounts to assist with home cooking. At the time it was down until 6:00 pm. When I went back to find the site I must of typed it in wrong. Cant find it under FDA web site. Wendy

Re: Home Cooked Diet-100 lb dog

This is to Gina,Moondog,and Kathy:
I know you are aware of my situation with my three dogs....Good news yesterday the puppies lab values all were within normal limit AND Dominicks Creatinine level has come down to 2.0, Bun @39. The Vet was Impressed on his overall improvements. Me to!!!! They run and play and eat everything put in their bowls, always wanting more. So far I have stuck to 2 simple recipes of with Im wondering if you all would beable to take a look at and see what modifications I should or could make?
2/3 cup Baked white Chicken Breast(diced)
1 cup boiled white med Rice
1/3 cup Cooked egg whites
1/3 cup cooked sweet potato
1/2 tsp. ground egg shells @ each meal

Second Recipe:
2/3 ground lean beef
1 cup Cooked White Rice medium
1/3 Cooked and pureed carrots
1/3 egg whites cooked
1/3 cooked squash
1/2 tsp, ground egg shell with each meal
With each meal I dice up an apple or pear and put it in last minute

Each day I give them a B-Complex Vit,CO-Q10, Every other day I give them 1 fish oil tab, and every 3rd day I give them 1 Vit. E.

I have started using just the filtered water water with them No longer distilled.PLEASE keep in mind I am just beginning at this but really do enjoy knowing what they are exactly eating! I have read through all the info you have given and now just trying to bring it together. Thanks to all of you...Wendy

Re: Looking for previous web site posted here!

It isn't the FDA, it's the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

Here's the link to the Nutrient Database (bookmark it, because they don't make it easy to find with their new, improved website! )

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Here's how I found it:

Main website: www.nal.usda.gov
Left side, click on Food & Nutrition
Next screen, click on Food & Nutrition Information Center
Next screen, on the right it says "I want to....." and gives a list of choices - click on "look up calories or nutrients in a food".
After all that, you have arrived at the above link.

Personally, I'd bookmark it!
